Default Headers

So I've been egged on to pull the trigger on some headers. My question is as to what brand? I know the performance benefit of Long Tube headers but do not want to loose torque so I am considering just a set of shorty's. I have alot of custom suspension components to work around as well as the magnaflow y pipe and high flow cats to work around. I was thinking JBA. Not too huge on the cheaper brands like summit, pace setter, or flowtech. Seen too many with broken flanges. What are you guys running? Any suggestions? I've kept my stock manifolds for so long because I heard that on the 5.9 that headers do not make that much power over the stock manifolds. What is everyone running out there?

you have your logic backwards. The longer the tube header, the more torque it will produce. The shorter the tube, the more high end gain.

And...I have been told that the stock 5.9 manifolds aren't that bad, flow wise. You'll notice a gain, but, nothing substantial.

Supposedly what limits these engines is the intake side. Anything you can do to get more air/fuel in the combustion chamber will make a bigger difference then exhausting the little bit in there, out.

As far as brand...I don't know.

Sorry if I got that backwards.... My mechanic said that for my app. it wasn't worth it (he's owned a 5.9L ram with headers before). I am def. with you on the fueling. I've been thinking of either modding my kegger or doing a hughes F1 Air Gap. I've heard mixed reviews on the hughes though.

talking to Hughes over the phone, they told me with just the intake, you actually lose some low end torque, but gain high end power. However, combined with a tuner, it made quite a bit more power from off-idle to the redline.

Also, a cam along with the same tuner would make a huge difference, as the same guy told me that the 5.9L cam is one of the smallest grind cams ever produced as its meant for instant, off-idle torque. However, in the power band, theres a point where torque disappears rapidly, and thats because the cam is way too small.

So, a cam, the intake, and a tuner to go along with it (preferably the ones that you tell them what you have, and they preload tunes for you), and you can expect quite a large boost in power. Definitley at least 75hp and tq I would say...from what I was told anyway.

But, supposedly, without a tuner, mods can actually hurt performance as the computer doesn't know how to make use of it.

Yeah I have the superchips tuner. I would probably do the intake and cam and see how they work with my superchips tuner. I want an SCT and know it would probably work better because of the custom tuning but I would buy it last because I already have the superchips. After the intake and cam.

What about these?

Almost seems too cheap or just a good deal?

If you can get some long tubes under that Dodge, I'd run them. Not that they'll make a bunch more power on a closed system than shorties. but no one can see over your hood to look at em.
However seeing those stainless or ceramic coated collectors under the truck when viewing it will add to the "badazz" factor.

I definitely agree that the headers would look sikk for a show factor but have decided that I would rather buy a hughes f1 air intake manifold for the same price as a set of headers. I would be killing two birds with one stone by adding more power and the shitty stock intake that is prone to leaking plenum gaskets. Like shiny stuff under the truck though.
