Default 2006 Ram 5.7 lifter noise

I am looking to purchase a 2006 Ram 1500 with a 5.7. It has 35000 miles on it but it has a lifter sound when it was idling. The owner said he used 5w30 oil in it and said that the noise is normal and mechanics claim it is due to pushrod clearance for fuel economy. Is this true? Should I be concerned? Is this easily correctable? Any info would help.

Thx

Scot

if they used 5w 30 you should point out to them only 5w-20 is used with the mds engine. therefore the wrong oil is in there, says right on the filler cap. but thats not causing the lifter sound.people with the hemi my self included call that the hemi tick most hemi engines develop it sometimes in the first 20k miles, but noise and all, they are good engines nothing to worry about and there is no cure.so if it bothers you and cant live with it dont buy it.

The hemi tick is not hurtful and well documented. I know 2 people personally who have the Hemi tick and 80k+ thousand worry free miles and there are plenty of people on the board who would say the same I agree w/ charlib if you can live w/ it get it but its nothing to worry about

Thank you for the replies.

Couple more questions.

Do these engines consume oil? Will they make it between oil changes without the need to add oil?

Since this engine is running 5w 30, you see any problems with going to 5w20? Would you use 5w 20 while towing a heavy load too?

Thx

Mine doesn't use oil but then again, I don't have a valve seal or piston ring problem either. Any engine will use oil if it's been abused or has a mechanical fault. The oil level of my truck is usually down 1/4 of a quart by the time I change it.

No problem going to 5w 20 oil and that is the recommended weight for all conditions on that engine.

I have 2010 Laramie with 5.7 and at 4400 kilometers the engine started ticking and then went to a miss and took it in to dealer and they had to replace a broken rocker arm and rocker shaft and pushrod so when I hear the noise yes I worry

the 2006 & newer 5.7 L engine needs 5W-20 & a quality oil filter WIX, NAPA GOLD, Mobile One, Purolator, AC DELCO, CarQuest are considered good filters

some of the other oil filters can cause an oil flow restriction & that can cause the tick also

i will be using WIX from the next oil change on

^^^^ Don't think so....ticks due to octane are really knock or pre-detonation which you would hear under load, acceleration, etc...

I can't use 87...my truck refused to run on it, even when it had the stock program. 89 wasn't much better...

I have a HEMI tick at idle when its cold and that's normal. It goes away after the truck warms up a bit. I don't hear it out on the road.
