Default Programmers?!?

Ok, i got a reasonable exhaust.
I thought about a "CHIP" but got a couple of PM's advising that a "Programmer" was the way to go. A lot of people seem to be using a Diablo, and that use "seems" to be primarily with Hemi's or modified engines. Also that use seems to be at times problematic.
I've got the 4.7 which is stock. At some point i will probably change the gear ratio, and maybe get a CAI, but that will be the extent of performance mods i'll be adding.
My question is.
Is a Diablo the best choice in programmers for me? If so, which model? OR,...Should i be looking at a Superchip which dosent offer the fine tuning capability, but for my use might be adequate.

To be honest with you, I would highly recommend the Diablo Trinity.

There's several reasons why:

1. Proven quality, talk to anyone that owns any Diablo tuner.
2. Great support.
3. No digital "footprint" left in the ECU, so it won't void out your warranty (if you have one)
4. It's supremely easy to use.

I'd highly recommend the Predator from DiabloSport. It's a great tuning tool, has some nice features for data logging, easy to install.

They aren't just for the HEMI and they have a lot of features that work well on stock engines, too.

Good luck with your choice.

You cant go wrong from anything by diablo, superchips or SCT although I forget it SCT is available for our engines. They all come preloaded w/ some idiot proof tunes that are nothing but plug and play with other more advanced options. I suggest looking around to see if you can get a used one from a reliable source. If the tuner is unlocked there is zero difference between a used one and a new one but youll save hundreds let us know what you decide.

I thought alot of people were all over the superchips, Is the Diablo better? Or is it a personal preferance thing?
Plus for folks like me with a 2002 4.7, is it true that we cant use the programmer for the tranny anyways? Its just a tune to the ECU for engine?

Well brothers. i went onto Diablo Sports website and i could not find any reference to my application (2008 Ram 1500, 4.7L V8, 4X4.) Hemis yes.
Anyone actually seen one in real life that would fit my app? Also, it seems one advantage to the Superchip tuner is the ability to tweak the Auto trans as well. I sure like the trinity's virtual gages. a real plus.
Any info would be great.

Any programmer should be good for you, minimal performance mods go great with a programmer. They also allow you to adjust gear ratios, tire sizes, etc...(at least I know for a fact superchips does). I have a superchips # 3865 I believe on my 2010 4.7L, love it. It is "idiot proof" with some adjustable features, but I probably won't ever adjust anything since it runs so good in the superchips performance settings. I picked up a mpg or two on avg (but its with 93 octane). It runs great, the shifting changes are what is best. It makes my truck feel like my buddies old hemi(early 2000's). If I were you I'd focus on price since any programmer will do what you want (superchips is probably the cheapest unless you go used, I think they are $360 shipped). Most everyone you will ask says superchips has hands down the best customer support there is, unfortunately from my experience I'll say their customer support is average at best, but nobody's perfect I guess.

My recommendation would be the BullyDog GT. Not highly recommended for the hemi, but I love it on my 4.7. Really woke her up. Not as many options as the diablo, but I personally would rather not be messing with too many settings. It has all I need in a tuner, with the added bonus of gauges. Plus I can easily use it on a different vehicle in the future. One size fits all. And feedback is generally positive from most 4.7 owners. Download time, however is a drawback. Sitting in the truck for 15 to 20 mins without radio gets a little tedious, but I only do that for bad weather and updates. I use the high octane tune and return it to stock for extreme weather as the extra hp will have you sideways in no time. Especially on a manual tranny.

No huge complaints and no buyers remorse from this owner. The USB to OBD cord could be better quality as sometimes I have to wiggle it just a little bit, but this complaint is not limited to the BullyDog. It seems this cord is something that gets cheaped out on by a fair few manufacturers. Saves a bit of fuel too, with conservative driving, but if you like to open it up a bit, like I do, combined with buying premium gas will nullify this pretty quickly. But, then again mpg gains were not why I bought a truck in the first place.

Like he said ^ my superchips also has the usb wiggle problem, not too big of a deal though, just annoying. If I ever lose connection and lose data or something I'll be pissed though. just for clarification, this is the cable to your pc for updates, not the cable to the trucks obd 2 port, that cable is good.
