Default Bad Brakes???

Hey all, curious if anyone else has had this problem. Twice know when on an incline and parked the truck wont hold and wants to shutter backwards(truck is turned off and parking break on). i caught it the 1st time and figured maybe the breaks where still new and possibly slipping, not sure if this matters. The second time wasnt soo lucky it decided to roll all the way down the incline and stopped once it leveled out. Luckly didnt hit anything. I take it to the shop tomarow to see what the deal is. Any suggestion on whats goin on with this???

I'm assuming your truck has a manual trans in it ? If so , It sounds to me like the park brake needs to be tighter .

nope and maybe. Its a 5 speed auto 2011 ram sport 5.7 hemi 3.92 lsd. parking break maybe loose but i just tried to see what would happen if just in park and it does the same thing. It starts to roll and seems like its trying to catch itself but still shutters down with and without the parking break on.

If the trans is in park it shouldn't roll "period" . The trans should be locked .

I would suggest you get your truck to the dealer ASAP you have a serious transmission problem. As Tom said your trans should be locked when in park. if it moves in park this is very dangerous. also if it moves with the parking brake on, this needs to be adjusted too.

just a note that may be of interest

any automatic transmission has what is called a PARKING PAWL, it is a pin that keeps the transmission from rotating & allowing the vehicle to roll forwards or backwards while in PARK, unlike just using the Neutral position that has no such pin.

When you PARK your vehicle on a grade, you already have your foot on the brake pedal when you shift into Park, you normally would just remove you foot from the brake pedal, have you noticed that the vehicle moves a little when you do remove your foot? your transmission just rolled against that pin putting pressure against the pin? Then when you go to take off again, the shifter is a bit hard to move out of Park & sometimes on some vehicles you hear a Clanking noise? it is because of the pressure against the pin when you Parked it.
Next time that your are going to Park on a grade, try pushing down on the foot brake, then shift into PARK, keep pressure on your foot brake, & then push down your Emergency brake fairly hard, then take your foot of the foot brake,
you should notice that the transmission doesn't set against the Parking Pawl as hard & when you go to take off again, the transmission lever will shift into Neutral much easier, then release your E brake & off you go

It certainly does seem that the transmission parking pawl is not engaging if it's in Park and rolls.

The e-brake should also hold the truck in place.

I'd have both items looked at as soon as possible.

Thanks for the info, I'm at the dealership now ( gotta love iPhones) they took it for a spin and Put it on their makeshift hill and it all happened again and they also noticed a clicking noise when they brake is applied. I will keep this updated when they tell what's goin on.

Ok just got the truck back from the shop and all they could come up with was that the emergency brake cable was loose and they adjusted it for me. It still doesnt make sense though that when in park the truck still wants to go backwards almost like the " parking Pawl " is trying to engage but we will see what happens. Thanks for the info.
