Default 5.9 Ram vs. 5.7 K1500(Chevy Silverado)

Hey fellas I am in the market for a truck and I am trying to find a comparison of these two and its hard to find. I realize this is going to be a little bias since this is a dodge forum but I think most of you are mature enough to just be honest of what you think.

Here is the deal. I need to know the advantages and disadvantages that these trucks have over each other.

Lets say. 1998 Dodge Ram Extended cab, 5.9 magnum, 4x4, SLT, auto.

vs

1994 Chevy K1500 Silverado Z71. Ext cab, 5.7, 4x4, auto.

Now I know the chevy is going to be cheaper but I am kind of on an anti chevy binge lately because I just hate the interiors and the build quality blows. However back in the 90's I hear that their full size trucks were amazing(says my dad that owns the 94 silverado). I also know that the ram's were very good.

Here is what I have put together so far.

Silverado is faster, better looking(opinion) on the outside, cheaper, parts are cheaper, and just from what all I have heard...more reliable(not that the dodge isnt)

However is also has worse interior, and the small things like starters, and switches and things will all break and nickel and dime me to death.

The ram has more low down torque for towing, has better interior, ill say stronger more durable exterior, and better overall build quality.

however it lacks highway passing power, parts are more expensive, the initial cost is more expensive, and everyone says the transmissions go out constantly(step dad has not had any problems with his in 140k miles but his may be lucky).

I know the ram gets about 14 mpg mixed, and I have no idea what the silverado gets. My dad says 8 mpg but I think his must just be broke.

What is everyones opinion here as to why they think one or the other is better.

PLEASE EXPLAIN YOUR OPINION AS TO WHICH YOU PREFER

thanks everyone

Again as you stated both vehicles have their good points and their bad . I can tell ya that I have had several problems with my trans , but then I can show ya several trucks with close to 200K on them and have never had a moments problem . Again 2nd gen Rams had problems with dashes cracking . My truck is 10 years old and the dash is still perfect . So now that you've heard my side of the story , I still haven't help ya make a decision . Good luck . Tom

Well i have to say chevy and dodge are my two favorite car companies. My mom used to have a 94 silverado and it was a great truck loved it, i know have a 2001 dodge ram, it's great. The only problem with mine is the dash is cracked pretty bad, but that's normal for dodges, mine has 74,000 miles on it.

dash cracks are the least of my worries....I have a camaro with a v8....thats the KING OF DASH CRACKS. haha

I am leaning on the dodge right now because I prefer the interior and the build quality feels like it's better.

What does everyone think of the 5.9 magnum? I mean is it easy/cheap to add power too?

When getting an older truck, I think it comes down to the individual vehicle more than the brand. My 1996 Ram was in better condition than the Fords and Chevys that I looked at. You can find a K1500 that is beat to hell and it will be worse than a Dodge. Or you could find a Ram in the same condition that will be worse than the Chevy. Check the trans fluid and transfer case fluid and you will have a good idea of how hard the truck was used. Check the oil, look at the shocks, and check for uneven tire wear and that should tell you how often the seller did maintenance.

The 5.9 Magnum is a solid engine. It's got a good amount of HP and torque. It can be prone to plenum leaks that rob it of power and mileage. Look down the throttle body to see if there's any oil inside. If there is, it's got a leak in the plenum gasket. It's really not a huge issue and you can get a repair kit for $120 from Hughes Engine that fixes the problem and prevents it from happening again. Safe to drive with, but you should take care of it before doing power mods.

Personally, I'd get the better truck of the two that fit your price range. A careful inspection should tell you what you need to know. Even putting aside brand loyalty, I have been perfectly happy with my Dodge and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

well I found out that the 95 Silverado's have updated interior that I don't mind at all, and in 96 they upgraded to the 5.7 vortec which matched power to the 5.9. The only thing is I cannot find anything about the 5.7 vortecs so I really don't know if they are as good as the 350tbi in terms of reliability, mileage(not that its good), etc

I have owned Chevy products and Dodge products. I can tell you that when it comes to parts being cheaper it depends. Calipers for one instance. For my older Chevy (85 GMC 1500) the calipers were $45 a piece. For my 97 Ram they were $15 a piece. For my broken Chevy dash panel $40 and for the Dodge dash $55. So really parts prices come out to be about even. I also find that I prefer the Dodge's 5.9 360 motor over my Chevy's 350. Once my Dodge gets up and running then I can compare which truck I prefer on the highway. So far I really like both. I guess it truly depends on which truck captivates your interest more. In my opinion buth trucks are good trucks.

Bulletproof 5.9! My best friend has an old Dodge 100 with the 360 and unknown mileage and he still drag races it!!! Cant beat the 5.9.
