Intermittent power loss, 2002 5.2
|
I dont know if this will get the most exposure here, If there is somewhere else here which may get more action please let me know,
This is in a 2002 3500 van with a 5.2 in it,
118K miles.
Only when engine warm.
Highway feels like all power gone for 1 to 2 seconds, Could do it every 20 miles or 3 to 4 times every 1 second on and off power, Floor pedal, then trans downshifts and pulls great!
Now get off the highway and it will sputter, Kick and occasionally backfire into the intake, But again, Floor it and it pulls great and runs fine.
I bought this truck a few days ago knowing of this issue, Now I need to fix it,
It does not throw a code,
Runs fine when cold,
Was at dealer twice with old owner and they could not find issue, I got the truck at a good price with this issue that again wont even show up till you drive it a good 1/2 hour.
We ran the truck for 800 miles the past two days and it wont shut off, Seems to idle fine and seems to give full power when asked,
Now when you give it just a small bit of throttle it will do the kick and buck thing or just feel like there is nothing there,,,,,,,
It has 118K now,
Notes show new cap rotor and wires at 89K, New plugs a couple thousand miles ago as well as a new coil.
New CAT and O2 sensors about 20K ago and a new Throttle position sensor 20K ago.
What would you do?
Any help is appreciated.
Thank you
Peter and Eileen

Hi Peter, read through your intro and the post here, I don't know where else to point you, hopefully one of our techs will see the post and chime in. Have you got a code reader to verify the lack of codes?

Dont have a code reader, But when 350 mile from home I stopped into an advanced auto and NOPE, No codes.
I swapped out the wired, Cap, Rotor and TPS this morning, Yea it runs fine just as it does till it gets good and HOT.
I found just a small amt of corrosion on the coil wire at the cap side, But not too bad looking,,,
Otherwise all looked clean as new,
I wont get the chance to get out on the highway for a few days since I only work 5 miles from home and drive an 81 Diesel Jetta up and back to work.
What can O look for?
I need to make this engine right for the wife to drive and for the 700 Mile round trips we will be doing shortly.
Thanks for any suggestions!
Peter and Eileen

How about fuel pressure ? I've also run across bad Map Sensors from time to time that won't set a code .

OK Looking for a MAP sensor as well as the distributer shaft sensor,
Now is there a ECM somewhere?
I dont mind tossing some $$s into the truck,

The ECM Is under the hood against the firewall. The connector for the scanner should be under the right knee bolster. I have a 1995 but had a 2003 and I know the 1996 is when the scan connector became avail. On the 1996 ram van it's on the left side. Anyway's you need to have the timing done I think. Have a vacuum and boost tester hooked up to test for bad timing etc...
Their is a bunch more that can cause these issues but you and I can only go through them one by one and take our time. But just go ever with me so I understand exactly what is going on in detail. Detail is important.

Try this ...
Make sure that your engine is using a copper/brass contacts for the cap-n-rotor parts. the aluminum gives poor performance and can allow the engine to cut-out briefly.
This has helped my 2001 B2500 Ram Van greatly once the wires were laided out to the pattern ...

Try a new Crank Positioning Sensor from Mopar.
