I got 2. If I remember correctly the rule is to work what's in the parenthesis first.

48 / (2(9+3))
And to add to the fun, it is considered inappropriate to have placed an "=" at the end.

^^^ Thats because it is 288 The way the equation is written, for simple mathematical purposes, due to the fact the it goes parenthesis>multiplication & division (from right to left). I can't believe we are still arguing over this lol.

I come up with 2. That is the way I was taught to calculate that type of problem.

You cannot divide 48 by "2(9+3)". You must first solve the 2(9+3). The correct answer is 2. In algebra there are [ ] ,brackets and then these ( ). They are used in this order [ ( ) ]. You solve the brackets first and then the parenthesis to get everything to a whole number to the right of the division symbol. Then you divide.

^^ Incorrect. I'll explain it again... As it is written you do the parenthesis first, leaving you with 48/2*12. There are no parenthesis enclosing the 2 so you do not automatically multiply it by 12. 48/2*12 is the same exact thing as 48/2(12) since the multiplication is assumed. According to the rules, you next multiply AND divide in the same step.. from left to right. As the equation is written, the answer is 288. In all reality, it doesn't really matter because you will never solve an equation without some meaning behind it. Based on what you are looking to find, that will dictate which steps you do first. But in this example with no background, the answer is 288 following the order of operation. Math is kinda my thing

I got 288. When I was in middle school I would have gotten 2. When I started High School they said work parenthesis, multiplication and division are on the same level, so work them left to right. Then addition and subtraction are on the same level, so work them left to right. So 288 it is. Here is a saying, let me know if anyone gets it. "There are 10 types of people in the world, those who understand binary and those who don't." And yes I know, it is lame.

Following the rules of mathematics - 288

An equation should never be written this way. This is math and it should never be 'suggestive'.

482(9+3) suggests that 2(9+3) is a combined calculation equaling 24, but when couple with the 48 in front, plays on the rules of mathematics, where multiplication and division have the same priority requiring you to calculate them in the order they appear, netting a result of 288.

To remove all suggestive reference, the equation should be written either of -
48(2(9+3)) = 2
482*(9+3) = 288

Great post! But I failed the equation writer for including suggestion/ambiguity into a math equation.
