I know this is an old thread, but I'm new and I'm really enjoying looking around. I recently bought a 2001 1500 4x4 Laramie SLT with 226,xxx. I know it probably wasn't the best idea to buy a truck with so many miles, but it ran well when test driven and I've wanted one since high school. I only have a 1/2 block "commute" and I figured after nearly 12 years of wanting one, I would treat myself.

When I got it home the fluids were HORRIBLE! The front shocks were absolutely garbage, the front brakes were down to the chirpers, the dash was...well a Dodge dash, the back doors wouldn't open, the radiator leaked, the a/c won't engage, and the A/C-Heater fan only works on high. The auto lot I bought it from had to replace a bunch of steering and alignment parts before they could sell it. They sent it out to a local shop where I know a guy that works there, turns out it was over a grand in parts and labor but we had already made a deal so they couldn't pass that on to me. Guess I lucked out there.

In other words, tons of miles and seemingly little maintenance but she runs smooth, and quiet (except for a noisy power steering that I can't figure out). Very easy truck to work on. I've been able to fix almost that whole laundry list at very low cost.

Yesterday I was given a complete 2000 5.2 with half as many miles that runs strong. I'm looking forward to building it while its out of the van it came from and still having the ability to drive my truck daily.

I must say that I'm pretty impressed with this high mileage 318

Mine's a 96 Dakota, 318, automatic, 4x4. It has 228,000 miles and doesn't burn oil. Does need a rear main seal, tho. I have to park it over a metal garage diaper to catch the drippin's.

I'd like to replace the the leaky seal, but the landlord takes a dim view. What's been done. I got it last summer and to my knowledge the P/O only did normal engine oil changes--he was using hi-mi oil, tho. Since I got it, I've replaced both differential cover gaskets & put in synthetic gear grease. Brakes were good, but the disks were warped, so I had them turned. The dash switch for the interior fan leaked all its smoke out, so I got a replacement (and also a spare) at the Pick a Part in Olympia and fixed that. (For a while, they had about 1/2 dozen Dakotas and were only charging $8 for the climate control panel.) At some point, the previous owner had the trannie rebuilt, a new alternator, & tie rod ends.

The truck runs, looks, and handles very nice--hard to believe it has so many miles. When money allows, I may look for another trannie & spare 318 engine. The 318 in this small a vehicle and with the gearing seems to do well on mpg. I get about 19 on trips, probably 14-17 around lovely, traffic light infested Tucson.

I have a 1986 ramcharger with the original 5.2 318 numbers matching engine in it, and best calculation is that it has over 300,000 miles on it, and I use the GTX High mileage

I'm an old guy with lots of time on his hands. I bought a precision built 5.2L out of Texas. It's a beauty, ported, polished, slightly cammed. We ripped out the old, installed the new, put 10,000 miles on it. Friday we put the Ram on the dyno to see if we could tweak her a bit. Damn computer holds her down to 220 hp at the engine & a mear 174 at the rear wheels. Although she blasted 4950 rpm with out a moan. The engine is built to pull 300- 350hp easily. Now to get away from that computer,,,, More work needs to be done.

I think that isn't really going to help or is worth it, see I think the issue with these engines and their poor fuel economy is related to the wearing of the valve train and cam shaft, think about it the stock cam shaft is not surface hardened like a performance cam shaft from say comp. So as the engine collects miles the lift is decreased and with the old pushrods and valve springs too, I'm sure the lift is a bit less than the initial .432" infinitesimal. You also have to remember, you want something to perform as best as possible, with respects of an items age or wear, you have to take care of it. Do you use fuel injector or fuel system + intake valve cleaner every 3000 miles? Do you change your oil every 3000 miles?

Also you have to remember that overtime the distributor gear wears so sometimes the spark lags, you may want to check the fuel sync using a professional scan tool, also have you recently changed the O2 sensor? Some brands, I hear Bosch is known for causing rich mixtures so you just consume too much fuel.

Miss my old 01 1500 regular cab Ram. Bought a 05 Cummins in 2009 then never drove the 01, it sat for 3 years then I got rid of it. It had 110,000 miles.
