Default Cheap Exhaust

The guy who inspects my girlfriends Cummins has put me in a predicament. He insists that it needs some kind a muffler on it or he wont pass it so I can't just straight the truck like I would like to.
Last summer her muffler basically rotted off. I just put in a piece of flex pipe as a temp. fix so the exhaust would exit the body.
Well the truck just got inspected and he passed it with the cat and flex pipe.
With summer coming around again I would like to replace the flex pipe with a cheap muffler and delete the cat.
I was looking into the Sneaker Muffler from Source automotive but at $95 Iwas wondering how hard you think it would be to gut the 12" long glasspack the same way?
Any other suggestions?

The law is actually really left to interpretation. Although there isn't any emissions on diesels, the law says that if your truck is equipped with a cat and muffler from the factory it needs to have one. The law also says that you only need something to suppress the engine noise, which includes a turbo. Most guys just let straight pipes go.
I along with my girlfriend have tried convincing her dad the guy has no idea what he's doing when it comes to diesels. As long as his names on the registration (insurance is through his business) its going to have to be taken to that guy I think.

I had a Magnaflow on my diesel--it weight half as much as the stock muffler and you could see right through it. Sounded pretty good too. I don't remember the cost.

My 2002 diesel didnt have a convertor from the factory..I guess it would have failed inspection in PA...It did however have a resonator.

It would have been fine since it didnt have it from the factory.

The more I think about I think its worth a shot hacking up a $30 cherry bomb and just welding a straight pipe through it
