Default crank swap question

does anybody know if a 383 crank will work in a 440 block?

I believe the main caps are different. You could have the 440 mains turned down or the 383 caps opened up. Either thing is going to weaken the part worked on.
Pistons for 383 seem to be hard to come by too

Are you trying to short stroke the engine? B engines (350/361/383/400) not only have different saddle sizes & deck height, but are also shorter stroke than an RB (383RB/413/426W/440). Normally people throw a 440 crank into B engine to raise the displacement (like 440 crank into 400 block = 451 B engine). Regardless, the 383 crank mains are smaller than the 440 main bore. You will need either a 413, 426 wedge or hemi, or a 440 crankshaft to fit correctly in a 440 block (or aftermarket).
