Default Towing capacity

I have a 2009 Dodge Ram 1500 with a 321 gear ration that when we pull our camper that weighs 4000lbs the engine light comes on, the company states it can pull 5500, and that nothing is wrong with the truck. Anyone got any suggestions??? We need help!!!

We have had it to the dealership twice, had it weighed loaded as coming in under 4000lbs, we have loved our truck but now we are not sure what to do. Thought about upgrading the gears but we are hearing we may loose our warranty.
Thought about decreasing our tires to 17 inch but that will also cost about 2000.00..
Just unsure about what to do. Everyone is blown away that our truck can't tow it, but no one can give us an answer on how to fix it..

You could go to a lower gear, if you tow often you will loose some MPG
BUT, you could go with the 3.55 or 3.90 ring & pinion from Yukon for something like $360 & labor
new parts would be warrantied through either a ASE certified garage or your Dodge dealership, if they will install it. Then you could sell the parts that are in it now & get some of your money back

or through Mopar
Ring and pinion, ram 1500, 3.92 ratio - CHRYSLER
09-10 $626.78 & labor

but, if it is a software issue & it still gives you that message ......... ?

What engine light was on? The light would not come simply because you towed more weight than the truck is rated for. It doesn't know how much you are towing. You have another problem that is causing the light to come on.

Good Point, have the dealer run the diag code and see what has happenned. If you are on the road and it happens, pull into a dealer and let them plug the truck into their computer.

Agree with the 2 above. Get it to the dealership and have them check the codes if you are getting an engine light when towing. My guess is the extra weight and strain on the engine is causing the issue. You sould have no problems at all towing 4000lbs with a Ram. You should be able to pass people left and right even with towing that little bit of weight.

Talked to our service guys yesterday and he seems to think the same that the engine light is coming on because the transmission is not performing to what it is suppose to be. The code we had stated that is was overloaded and that the transmission was slipping. So we are going to take our camper out again and see how fast the light comes on. It usually comes on as soon as we pick up speed to 60ish and the tow/haul is engaged, Both times we used it it came on within minutes of getting on the highway..

Tow rating assumes roughly the same 36.6' Frontal Area as the truck. If your trailer has more frontal area it will reduce the trucks ability.

Assuming nothing is wrong with the truck try placing it in "ERS 4" when towing which will lock out the two overdrives and place you around 2000 rpm @ 60 mph. I think the transmission is slipping in overdrive because of a combination of high frontal area (80'-100'?), tall tires (33") and tall gears (3.21).

If you decide to make changes to the truck I would suggest 3.92 Gears and keeping current tires. Changing tires would only change effective gear from 3.21 to 3.34 and at worst you would only lose warranty on the rear differential not the whole truck. Just have the dealer reflash the PCM for the sales code for the 3.92 Gear to keep speedo, transmission, odometer and ABS functioning correctly.
