R/T is a fast, sporty truck. Weight might have been stripped and suspension that handles great does nothing but sag under a heavy load. At least they have a metal bed unlike the old Ford Lightnings, there bed were fibergalss if I'm not mistaken.

you could be right about this, but i find it hard to believe, whats the point of even having a bed. not that i ever considered buying a lightning, but it never would have occurred to me to ask about the material the bed was made out of. what a useless truck!

Got interested in if I was right. Not sure if the older trucks did it but it looks like the new one will as an option anyway. Good luck keeping it between the lines!

The standard edition will have all the form and function as you have grown to appreciate in the Gen I and II Lightning’s. It will be able to haul a good amount of home improvement goodies and haul some but too. The 2010 Drag Pack Ford Lightning will be a more specific breed and be more of a performer at the track. The 2010 Drag Pack Ford Lightning will be a good 800 - 1000lb lighter than the standard edition The 2010 Drag Pack Ford Lightning. It will come equipped with a full fiberglass bed and track tune suspension.

i guess there are people who would want this, but if the track was all i was interested in, i would get a mustang. to each their own i guess.

I had an 04' Lightning...the bed has nothing to do with the towing capacity...the hitch is bolted to the frame, not the bed. I towed a 7' x 14' cargo trailer loaded to about 6000 lbs with a weight distributing hitch from Colorado to Texas. It did OK...but the gas mileage SUCKED!!!
As far as the beds consrtuction, the inside was metal, but the outside panels were fiberglass just like the 01 Ranger Edge+ I owned.

The wheel tire combo I'm sure have something to do with the tow rating also.

Atleast you can put a hitch on a lightning unlike a cherokee srt8

Stepside beds=fiberglass too
