Default Lazy/non-existent downshifts - anybody else with this issue?

Hi Folks -

I've seen a few references on the board to this issue - wondering who has had their dealers look into the problem and what the fix was.

I'll be motoring along at 40-45mph, let's say on a highway on-ramp...time comes to punch it and accelerate into traffic, and the truck just won't downshift. I have to back off the throttle completely and hammer it - it's almost like it gets confused (at times, I'll notice this is when I'm coming out of MDS) and it'll just hold whatever gear I'm in. Makes for an interesting time merging onto some of the highways where I live.

Doesn't seem to be a mechanical issue - seems to me like it's just the shift logic/computer getting confused as to what it should be doing.

Are there any TBS's out there for this issue? I'm going in this Friday to have my L14 HVAC recall performed, and I was going to mention the tranny issue, but I'm sure they "won't be able to duplicate it".

Again, any others out there experiencing this and if so, was there a fix via a reprogram by the dealer?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Can't say I've ever experienced that with mine. Even with moderate 'Go pedal' operation, it'll down shift as soon as the engine starts to work. I personally do not like automatic transmissions, but if i have to have one, the one I have is pretty OK.....at least I can manually shift if I have to.

Superchips with advanced transmission tuning will get rid of this and any other issue you have with the transmission. You have the ability to customize the shifting to your liking.

Yea what rainhater said. shift from d-5 that'll make the tranny more mechanical. When u floor it your pedal sends a signal to the ecu it opens the throttle less quickly when in d, then the trans is told to shift or not to shift b/c wheelspeed is high, u might reach the governor blah blah blah. manual shift is as close to a sport mode as the auto insurance institute will allow.

I just noticed this happening this week to mine. Went to go around somebody and no guts stayed in the same gear, like I was driving a Chev

I had to floor it, and finally it kicked down but was very slow. First time it's happend to mine, hope it's not a pattern

I have noticed this a few times, would take about 3 seconds or so to downshift upon flooring it, and I have superchips 93 tune. I only drove the truck about a week before the superchips so I don't know if it did it before. I also agree it seems like a computer or logic based issue, not mechanical. I also noticed my trans seems to slip slightly from 1st to 2nd, wheras other shifts are very firm...

a month ago i took my '09 in for a shifting sort of grinding noise when going into reverse, they said that it was fixed, told me it was the drive shaft, i thought yeh right
now it is doing it shifting into all gears, sounds like a sloppy standard transmission linkage when a throw out bearing is starting to go bad
Glad that i bought the Lifetime Maximum Care Warranty
I'm saving up for when they come out with the ZF 8 speed & possibly a ZF rear end like in the full sized Jeeps, maybe by then the 6.4L engine will be an option
by this time next year, i should have at least $30,000 to spend on a down payment

Yeah, I guess the 1-2 shift is just engineered as really sloppy but yes, it's definitely a computer-based issue. I can sometimes duplicate it - around 45mph, coming out of mds and trying to downshift - I'll have to really floor it, then let off, then hit it again and THEN it'll downshift. It's caught me by surprise a few times merging into traffic. I'm going to have it checked out for what it's worth.
