Default Opinion needed on 3.92 gears

So I have a narrowed my search down to two different Crew Cab Sports. Both well equiped. One a little more than the other (back up cam and sun roof) two different dealers for approx the same price. the one with better equipment has 3.92 gears. As about 70 percent of my driving will be hwy miles, do you think it will hurt the already poor MPG? By the way I will not be doing much towing and no drag racing.lol Thanks

I have the 3.55's and wish I had the 3.92's for the limited slip differential. There are many unhappy 3.55 owners just for that reason. If I had it to do again I'd go for the 3.92's and never look back.

jump on the Ram with the 3.92 rear end, it can do more & your MPG is slightly different, not enough to really matter unless you drive a few thousand miles a week

My 2010 has 3.55 gears and I get better mgp with the MDS off on the highway at 65-70 mph. The 3.55 gears are too low for the wind resistance and weight of the truck. It is in and out of gears constantly, every time gust hits the front of the truck. I'm still astonished how the 3.55 gears made it into production. I've also got the ST model which has the smallest tires of them all, so can't imagine what it's going to be like when I replace the factory rubber with 33" tires. Guess it still works good for when you are coming out of the mountains on a descent that takes a few miles.

I traded in my 2010 with 3:55s for a 2011 with 3:92s. Nuff said!!!

Simple: 3.92. Unless you are looking for every mpg you can find.

i've always had trucks with limited slip. bought my truck in jan and even with some of the heavy snow storms, ice storms and rain i didn't miss it. between the limited slip that is standard, and the new all wheel drive feature, i'm not not sure if it is really needed anymore unless you are getting a 2 wheel drive truck. i live in the very northern part of very hilly new jersey and find the 3.55 work well for me. this ratio has also been fine on the hwy. if ever get a heavy toy and start towing it, rather than getting a new truck, i'll just regear to 4:10 or higher. i think you'll be fine with the 3:55. best thing to do is take a good ride in both trucks, not just the usual 15 min test drive. try an test in on your daily commute roads and then go back and drive the other the same way.

i also wonder about the 3:55 and 3:92 ratios. wonder why dodge doesn't replace with 3:73 and 4:10 ratios. for me 3.73 would be perfect. this is what i had in 2500 and 3500 diesels. not worth it for me to change out 3:55 to 3:73 though.

By 2002 Ram with 2 wheel drive has a 3:73 limited slip & it is great even with only the 4.7 motor. Agree with the others that are disappointed with the 3.55 gear. If could do it over my 2010 would not be a 3.55. Live & learn

Jump on the 3.92 gear - my next one will have it.

my ST has the 3.55's...will be going to 4.10's within the month. currently running 275/70/18...33x11's pretty much the 3.55's do ok, still plenty of get up and go, but most of my driving is on base/city so the 4.10's will help out a lot better
