Since I commute over 100 (mostly highway) miles a day, I had decided I wanted 3.55 gears, but could only get the limited slip with the 3.92. I (reluctantly at the time) settled on the 3.92's and I'm glad I did. Great pickup, smooth power on the highway, the tranny is never searching around for the right gear, and of course the limited slip. Oh, and I get 20 mpg on the highway if I drive at reasonable speeds. I can't imagine my mileage would be any better with the 3.55's, and I don't think the driveability would be anywhere near as good.

These guys are funny, acting like the 3.92 will have the same milage as the 3.55...

When the '09 launched there's a reason why Dodge supplied all their test trucks with 3.55 ratios - it's the best combination of pull and fuel economy for what most people will be using their trucks for.

I have the 3.55, don't experience any "hunting" like others have said, even when I'm towing 6000 pounds plus. I have 4x4 with DSC & TC, have yet to run into any situation where a limited slip was necessary.

The WORST think about trucks is fuel economy, so why go with high ratios (unless you do serious towing) or drag racing (but why use a truck for that??) Then again, this is the segment that can't wait to put even bigger tires on their truck...

I don't even know why people start these threads anymore. If there is almost universal consensus on ANYTHING on this forum, it is this one simple thing:

GET THE 3.92

ALWAYS

If you have the choice.

The only people you will ever see contradicting this are people who ALREADY ENDED UP with 3.55's because that's what their truck had and they are now trying to make the best out of the situation in their own minds, it's human psychology. Almost nobody who buys one new here would get the 3.55 over the 3.92 by choice, given the choice.

I had the 3.55s to start and they did pretty good. No hunting for gears and even went east to west and back to the east coast over a 3 month period averaging right about 20mpg. I think it would have been better if not for all the wind and hills across KS and then CO. What I notice now with the 4.10s is that MDS is more consistant. At hwy speeds with my 3.55s MDS would kick off on small inclines, a little wind or if I tried to bump the cruise control up a mph or two. None of that happens now. My most recent trip (write up in the 2009 section) was from Norfolk to Charlotte and back netted me 21.2 mpg.

what I don't think people realize is that at 70 mph with the stock 20s the rpm difference between 3.55 and 3.92 gears is only 176 rpm. That's nothing.

I have 2011 with 3.55 gears and yes is doesn't like MDS and hills, even slight incline. The slightest little throttle increase and MDS kicks out, but really, who cares? However, if I didn't know there was a 3.92 option I'd be happy. The only reason I want lower gears is because I want more power. I say buy the truck you like the best. If all is equal, buy the one with 3.92's. I wouldn't base my purchase on the rear end gears but if they're available, then get them. As for traction, the traction control works better than any limited slip I've used and the auto 4wd is even better.

I have 3.92's. 2 of my friends with 3.55's have driven the same route as me numerous times, and I always have a gas mileage advantage....not much (.5-1mpg)....but an advantage non the less. This fuel mileage advantage increases when pulling trailers. I pull 6500lbs, and had one of them pulling just under 6000. I was running 2-3mpg better under those conditions. One of them upgraded his 3.55's to 3.92 about 3 months ago, and is now getting the same mileage I am. The other guy is considering the same, especially since he does a lot of trailer towing, and the 2-3mpg difference is worthy of consideration.

BTW - In one test where we drove 200miles at 50mph with a 30mph tailwind; no trailers, they both got about 2mpg better than I did.....that was the only time.

I think everyone's situation is different. I have 3.55 gears and it works for me.
It is fairly flat around here.
I pull a pop up camper or a trailer with a couple of dirt bikes, both fairly light.
I have pulled a trailer with a car on it a couple of times with no problem.
I came from a 2008 F 150 FX2. It had 3.55 gears with LS as it was 2WD.
The Ram has 90 more HP. (key point! )
I kind of wish I had LS, but I'm not sure why.
We had record snowfall this year and I live in a rural area. I pushed snow with the front bumper many times this year with no problem. The 4WD and traction control worked great.
I suppose I would have opted for the 3.92 if I had seen this forum before I got my truck based on the consensus, but I'm happy with what I have.

Jeff
All in all this truck is great improvement over my last 6 Fords.

I have a 2011 with 3.55. I wish i have a 3.92 with with limited slip. (my next RAM) lesson learned.
If you are looking for power get a 3.92 but the 3.55 is a nice daily truck too, just weaker.

I don't think this post is even close to undecided. Read into the posts of people that have swapped the gears (i.e. have experience with both). My truck runs more stable with MDS off with .5 increase in MPG as noted by another driver. That should say it all.

3.9 = same MPG and better performance on low and high end with more stable MDS switching which is going to be easier on the tranny in long run, and make you smile on accelerations. Easy decision.

I am also about to have 3.92 gears with LS installed in my `11 ST regular cab, primarily for better acceleration and traction. It's not even a debatable issue for me so...I won't debate it.
