Default Can we force truck into MDS

Hi All,

I have an 07 Hemi with MDS. I was recently reloacted for work and now have a 60 mile commute each way. I was wondering if there was a switch that could be added to force the truck into MDS mode on the highway. There are times I get great mileage (23) then others I get 17 on the same drive. I would like to be able to hit the switch when I am cruising at 70 and have it go to 4 cyl mode.

Any suggestions? Is it possible?

Why doesn't it automatically do it at 70?

never heard of a switch and I don't know if a custom tune would help. MDS activation is mostly based on trottle position so the best way to control it is with your foot. if it's windy/hilly you'll have to use a little more pedal and it won't kick on. depending on your gears and rpms at 70 mph you might not be high enough in your power band to overcome the wind resistance with just 4 cylinders. oh and you also can't be in tow/haul mode.

hope this helps some. maybe an underdrive crank pulley or removing your mechanical fan and using an electric fan with a 180 t-stat would help. both of those mods free up some of hp lost from turning the accessories.

It's hard to tell when you motor kicks out cylinders because there is no light like in the Chevys. The best I've ever gotten with my 06 was 19 over 280 miles, but some of that (about 25 miles) was in and around town.

That must have been another one on the Gen IV changes b/c it tells us (on the EVIC) when MDS has activated. if you have an aftermarket exhaust you can also hear it kick over.

took me a while to find it but here is a link to a chat session with the Ram engineers. Takes a little while to get thru it all but there is some good info on how MDS operates and how to disable it...for those that want to.

Found this procedure on installing an "MDS" light to show when it is on or not.. Have not tried it since I disabled MDS with my programmer anyways and have not seen much of a difference in MPG (I drive mostly highways at around 78 - 80 MPH)

Thanks everyone. I have already installed the light. There just seems to be a lot of times that I think it should kick in that it doesnt. I think the MDS engineers tuned it to be slow to work as to make it transparent to the end user. I would not mind to feel a little power loss on the highway if it led to better mileage. I was just seeing if I could force it in somehow once I reach highway speed.

I didn't get off of this site but I did get it off of another site two years ago and I did the install to let me know when my truck was in the mds mode, If I can find them I will post some pictures.
