Default My Rams worst enemy is here..

Hey gang,

I hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful spring weather, even though he haven't seen much of it here in Michigan!

Unfortunately, I've been noticing a decent amount of rust and signs of rust on my Ram. Throughout the course of the last winter here in Michigan, I have had a few small rust bubbles pop up over my fenders. None have popped, but I am a bit worried with them. I don't want rust there! I also have rust all along the bottom of my tailgate. I seem to be getting rust along the bottom of my truck as well. I have paint chips missing along the underside of my truck too. I'm so confused with how to approach all of this. Do I paint over it? Do I sand and repaint? I know I'm somewhat screwed on the tailgate and fenders. I know some of you have had these problems, and I'm hoping I can get some help.

Thank you for your time!

Chris

You just might want to get an estimate at a body shop, rust is like a cancer, get rid of all of it or it'll come back.... Just painting over rust wiil make it worse, you have to go down to bare steel, prime and paint...

best bet is to go to a body shop so they can do it properly and depends on the shop you will have some type of guarantee or warantee. the worst thing you can do is paint over it.... it will come back with vengence

You'll want to strip, treat the area for rust (POR-15 or similar material) and then re-prime and paint.

^^^^^^ All of the above ^^^^^^

Especially the part about it not looking too bad, so jump on it now before you have a problem.

I was gonna say that it didn't look too bad. It appears to all be surface rust. I agree it would be best to have a body shop fix you up, but I believe you could do it yourself in a weekend and have pretty good results.

I've since moved out of the rust belt, but on an old '89 Chevy that I had I used a little bit of surface rust as an excuse to create my own custom paint. I wasn't then, and I'm not now an expert on either painting or body work, but I was pleased with the results.

Sand it down to metal using various grades of sandpaper, then prime it, sand it again, then paint. All of my rust was in the lower half of my bed, so I taped off a section and painted the entire bed below the tape line gloss black, where the rest of the truck remained a sort of sun faded reddish pink (you've got to love the 80s paint)

good luck

Exco

i noticed its all along bottom of vehicle you could sand(to bare metal)/prime/rocker gaurd/then colour match.will cost under 100 bucks and a full sunny day todo it yourself.or goto the body shop as every1 suggests for 1600 bucks.

Best forum in the world Thank you so much to all of you who have replied and gave your suggestions. I'm a bit tight on cash for a body shop, so I think I will make this a weekend project when I get time.

Thanks again!
