Default finally,1st trip towing with the outgoorsman and ..... it sucked!

Well after getting the new truck all set up to tow the camper we finally headed out last thurs. We go see our son at college 4 hrs away,it's mom's weekend so we go to a park 2 hrs away, spend the night and then got to a park near him and my wife spends the weekend with him and i camp by myself. Hit the road thurs during strong winds. the head winds and side winds were beating us up, pushed us around quite a bit and got 7.3mpg all highway at about 65.we.ve made this trip plenty of times with our 05 4.7 towing a pop up and this trailer but this made me think maybe this truck's not going to cut it. friday's tow was a whole different story, light winds 1.5 hrs of freeway an half hour of winding, hilly country road the truck was great, it felt like i was towing the pop up back there, not a 5300 lb barn. got 10.3 mpg his what i was expecting.4 hour trip back on sun was just as good , got 10.1 mpg and the add on factory brake controll works great i thinks it's going to be a great tow vehicle after all

I towed my boat from the storage spot on base to my house...like 2 miles....I thought I was going to be towing my wifes car to our next base, but it looks like I'll still have my boat so she's gonna have to drive

So it was just the effect of the winds that made the trip out so bad?

I ask b/c the gear ratio is the largest determining factor of tow rating. Outdoorsman models come with 3.55 standard with the 3.21 and 3.92 gears being an option. There are others, some with 3.55s, but it usually seems like owners with 3.21s complain about the towing performance. It sounds like it was really windy and when you are towing around a large flat surface I can see how it might suck. Combine that with some non-towing friendly gears and it probably wouldn't be a very fun drive.

Nice recovery, from the subject I thought I'd only read a rant, glad things turned out better.

LOL, I was "quoting you" as in what gears did he have "??????"
I can see where it didnt look right, thanks for the info, but I understand the gear thing

I have the 3.92 in my Outdoorsman, and that why I was wondering, I havent towed anything with it yet.

But I did have about 45 concrete blocks in my 2010 TRX with 3.92 and I couldnt even tell the truck was loaded down.

it's got the 3.92 weight distribution hitch and anti sway bar, once the wind was out of the picture,it towed great . the old truck was a 4.7 with 3.55 and would downshift several times on the longer, steeper grades. this one never downshifted more than once.
