Default Another LED Mod completed

Been wanting to get this one done for some time. I love my truck but could stand to have a bit more light inside. It gets very dark below the stereo and AC knobs. I've read many posts where LEDs were added and that seemed to be the answer. But I didn't want to have them powered all the time nor did I want to install a toggle switch. So I did some research and grabbed my multimeter. I was searching for a wire that was live only when the other dash lights came on. After a little playing I found one and as a bonus it also ties to the dimmer, so when the dash dimmer is turned the LEDs adjust as well.

I know, I know... Pictures and description! Since for the life of me I can't figure out how to insert a picture, so I'll attach them and give a description.

Pic 1: Before

Pic 2 & 3: After Removing the bezel and the cup holder piece I found a dead harness (it must be for a feature I don't have, it was just sitting in a recess). I found the 3rd wire (Orange & White) to suit my needs.

Pic 4 & 5: Picked a spot and drilled a couple of hole. There is a flat spot on the cup holder support plate that has an angle which will allow the light to shine down. Be careful here, I did some measuring and still almost fit a strength rib on the back. I put a dab of clear silicone to make sure they stay in place.

Pic 6: Since I didn't have a crimp coupling I decided to just strip the Orange and White wire and wrap the two LED Black and White wires around the Orange and White and tape it up good.

Pic 7: I did have some ground clips so I put both solid black wires from the LEDs into one clip and found a handy existing ground.

I tested it all again beforeIi reassembled the dash.

Pic 8 & 9: All put back together and turned it on!

Can't wait to see how it looks in the dead of the night.

What size of LED did you use on this mod. Looks super clean and almost stock. I like it a lot and have been trying to think of a way to light my mine up and now I have found it.

It looks good!

If I may make one suggestion. You might want to look into painting the top side of each LED, as I think you'll find that it's a bit bright, shining up into your face while driving at night. I had to do this when I made a similar mod in my PT, I just used a little bit of touch up paint that I had lying around from an old vehicle (I think it was Silver)

Exco

Not really sure what size the lights are, I used a 3/16 bit though. Be careful, I had to ream the hole out a little, one side I got just right, the other I opened it up a little to much, hence the reason for a dab of silicone on the back side. I picked up a 4 pack of lights from Advance Auto Parts, about $10.00. Alpena Hyper LED was the brand.

Your absolutely correct. I put them at a nice down angle that they don't shine up so much, but on the way into work this morning I notice two strange white lights in my rearview mirror. Apparently it is a reflection off my back window. So I just finished coating them a little. I choose black because thats what I had on hand and it matches that part of my interior. I'll let you know tomorrow if it got rid of the mirror shine.

Yep, I planned for and did a visual test to see that the tray will close with the lights added. It all work fine.

cool beans...I was just gonna use some of the double sided 3m things, but it doesn't like to stick to the plastic very well, so wire harness it was lol
