Default Swapping 4.7 for a diesel

I have wanted a diesel truck since I got my drivers license. I ended up buying a gas truck because I couldn't afford to get a diesel.

Over the past few days I have been researching waste veg oil for fuel, and browsing other sites looking for people that had swapped the motor in a newer truck. Basically I haven't found anyone that has swapped a 4.7 gas motor for a diesel, or anyone that has done this in a 'modern' truck.

I 've seen older trucks, 1980-2000 range, that were swapped with a 4BT Cummins motor. I'm trying to figure out the costs involved with this.

My truck is a 2009 Ram, 2wd auto, 4.7 engine. Is it possible to put a small diesel in this truck? (4BT Cummins being the one I'm mainly interested in)

With older trucks you don't have the problems such as computers, wiring harnesses, handful of sensors on everything, emissions, etc.

ANYONE with any information please help me out, it would be greatly appreciated.

Havent seen it done on a ram but my buddy has one in a CJ5 jeep.
Your looking at alot of work and custom fabrication.
He pulled his out of a old frito lays truck so he managed to snag some of the electronics that went with it.

The more research I do, the harder this looks.

I may just try and find an older diesel with low miles and see if I can trade my truck for it.

The whole purpose of this is to run my truck on waste vegetable oil [aka. almost free diesel] because both diesel and gasoline are over $4.00/gal here.

you might want to double check...but unless you're sticking to offroad use only....you won't be able to register a 1500 with a diesel....since 1500's aren't offered with a diesel (yet....come on Cummins and Dodge for 2013!!)

buddy at work was thinking about doing it in his '99....and I put a lot of thought into it for my '09 as well....just something you might want to research a little more

My girlfriend and her dad used to use a vegetable oil/diesel blend a little over two years ago.
Honestly not worth the trouble. It has probably cost them more in the long run then it did save them (7 injectors and several fuel filters among other things)
Plus they could only run it if temps were above 50*f. I got a call one day if I had anytricks to get them started since the ratio was to lean towards the vegetable oil. After sitting for awhile plugged in with torpedo heaters pointed at the block it finally decided to fire (as the tow truck was pulling in the driveway)

You would need specialty plates/registration for a 1500 with a diesel

The temperature isn't an issue, the system I would be using uses two tanks. One is for diesel, the other for WVO. The truck starts on diesel and after it's warmed up, switches to WVO. The WVO is heated by coolant lines that come from the engine and back to the tank, the same way that your cab heater works. Basically after your engine is hot, the oil is hot.

The injectors was probably caused by improper preparation. The fuel should be filtered with a 2-micron or better filter for best results.

EDIT: That Jeep makes me drool

What would my 4.7 motor and 5 speed auto transmission be worth?

Just hit 40,000 miles, has had full synthetic Valvoline oil since day 1, K&N oil filters, Seafoam and Lucas Oil fuel treatments every other oil change.
