Default Hissing noise?

Ok, alittle about the truck. 2000 Dodge Ram 1500, single cab, 5.2L V8, 150k miles. Replaced ALOT on this truck, too much to list. Anways, i believe the problem to be pressure building up but from what is ?. After letting the truck sit for acouple days, starts up fine but sounds like its releasing air, hence the "hissing". only does it at start up then dissolves as i drive within 5 minutes. Ive poked around the bay and found no vacuum leaks and no codes at all. What is causing it, the only other problem i have with the truck is the occasional 'BANG" and then stall from the engine when i start it up, but it hasn't done that since i replaced the IAC, plenum gasket, and did a tune up. Any ideas?

You should buy a leak down compression tester which allows you to test leaks from all sorts of places. Anyways be sure that you torque everything properly (very important) and because your at 150K miles you should replace your head gaskets and valve stem seals maybe do a valve lap job but if you do that valve job make sure the you keep the proper margin on the valves cause if you loose that margin you burn a valve.

clean the throttle body (this isn't going to fix the problem but I like to keep TB's clean idk why...)

you should do an oil pressure test too and also do a vacuum test, if the needle is bouncing at idle then you have some issues with the engine's intake and vacuum.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND YOU DO A VALVE JOB, Once you take the heads off you will be surprised at what you can find anything from a oil leak to a coolant leak to burn valves just about anything.

I can't tell you exactly what that noise is but all I can say is you need to do a little more work. Whole new gasket set and torque it all properly (im an pain when it comes to that you can tell)

anymore help or questions torque specs whatever just ask me and i will help you best i can

I should have also said that the truck drives perfect, why would i have to replace my H.G;s for? My engine is perfect other than the hiss, no leaks, no missing oil, heck it doesn't even burn oil. To me that seems like a lot of useless work to attempt go fix a small hose or pressure leak. Ive done a oil pressure test about 2 months ago, was in normal range.

It's not useless work considering you have 150K miles you are going to have to end up replacing those head gaskets soon anyways. Why replace the spark plugs with cheaper ones don't but I am just saying no need to get expensive plugs, but if you prefer platnium then whatever.

Anyway's your not burning oil now but it's always a good idea to do a valve job when you get to 100K miles and it's just smart to replace the seals because if you don't do it while you do a valve job it can be a real pain to do when the heads are installed on the block. Anyways does the hiss sound noticed when the engine is running or off?

Just throwing it out there.....
Have you noticed a drop in power under WOT condition?
Just a thought....especially if you do.....if the CAT is starting to get restrictive, you could experience a higher than normal back pressure, which when the engine is cold, could be leaking some of that pressure between the exhaust manifold and head. Once the manifolds warm up, they seal a lot better, so could be holding the pressure in the system.
Like I said....just a thought....

And, I would agree with Hemi that's it's Paris....but she hasn't posted here yet, so we can rule that out for now.

When will people grow up and be serious about their trucks.....well....I'm pretty serious about my truck, but am resisting the 'growing up' thing as much as possible.

Ok well im ruling out the heads or valve seals, just my personal opinion that i wont have to do that for a long time no matter what my mileage says. Anyways hissing starts after a cold start, while running, for maybe 30 seconds then dissipates, as to the power, i've actually seen a pickup under WOT since she just had a tune, still surprises me just how great she runs for her mileage . But that was a good suggestion as im pretty sure she has the factory CAT still on, im going to look into that thanks

i never said it was stem seals or the head gaskets anything i said you should just replace those gaskets next time your really under the hood working on the engine and to do a valve job for the overall health of the engine. you could be loosing some power from sticking valves. and just take care of the engine is really what im getting at. but as far as hiss sound, i would need to be their with my ear
