Default Serious Lag While Accelerating

I have owned 3 different Dodge Rams. Being that this is my third I realize how long each gear is with the 5 speed. Most of the Lag I have experienced in prior experience was from about the 40 mph speed range. However all of my other dodges would throw you in your seat from the 30 mph range. I went to kick it at 30 the other day to make a traffic light and it was almost like the Ram died and then came back to life. It seemed like forever, when it might have been less than a second. Don't get me wrong, pulled like hell once it caught but has anyone else experienced this with the 4th generation rams with the Hemi?

Did I just catch like a computer glitch or something?

I'm guessing you haven't the truck long.

I know exactly what you are talking about. After the 3000mi mark, this improves...somewhat.
When you are in 'Drive', and traveling in the sub 40mpg range, you can actually floor it, move your foot to the brake pedal and start applying the brakes before the engine responds This is a combination of MDS and computer lag, and is 'normal'

As I have owned a couple of Hemi Rams prior, but they were 2500's (no MDS) and standard transmission. The transition to a truck with MDS and trans lag was so evident, I felt I could measure the lag with a calendar.

I have had my 2010 Ram now for almost a year, and have gotten quite used to the lag, but often pull the shifter to the left to show '5' in the EVIC. In this mode 'ERS', MDS is tured off, and throttle lag is reduced. If I downshift to lower gears, the throttle lag reduces more. I have also noted that the throttle lag is increased when the cruise control is active.

This summer I will be experimenting with a tuner to see how much 'old school' driveability I can attain.

If you are in O/D around town, I'd take it out of O/D to reduce the lag.

Even my 07 has some lag if I am in too high of a gear at low speed. I just shift the trans down to stay in the power band.

I never run around town in MDS. i found around here with the hills I get beter fuel mileage. But I also feel the lag but at lower speeds. If I'm at a complete stop and really get into it it seems like it takes forever to get up and go.

I'm guessing you were driving in MDS mode when you experienced the lag. Whoever invented MDS needs to be shot.......multiple times.

Well I actually just rolled over the 3K mark. I haven't really laid into it at all though. This was honestly like the first time. I see what you are saying about getting used to the MDS. My first Dodge was 2000 with a 5.9 and a 5 speed manual, so when you kicked in the ass on the downshift, it was there instant. My last Ram 1500 was a 2004 Rumble Bee, with a few mods. I also started really looking into what I have too and didn't realize that I have a 3.55 rear end which probably has a lot to do with it too.

I did just try today what you recommended with throwing the shifter and making it lock into 5th. It did work a lot better for me. I do have to say though I love the MDS even though a lot of people hate it. I just went on a long trip and got 20mpg out of it, calculated at the pump... so a little lag I can put up with when I go on long trips camping.

Thanks for the input though!!

I did try that b/c actually around me at low speeds I tried locking it out of MDS and agree that I think I got better mileage. It is constantly going in and out of MDS mode and can't pull the hills in it so you lose momentum.

I do understand also from the stand still it feels like a dog but think that is b/c I was used to a lighter ram with a 3.92 rear end. Which rear end do you have?

Yeah I will admit now realizing that it has a lot to do with the MDS that it is kind of annoying when you want to get up and go quick. But like I said in the other post, i just came back from a almost 400 mile camping trip and got 20mpgs out of it with MDS. So I do like that factor.

I also saw that you had a tailgate dampener... Is that hard to install? Also where did you get it from?

Thanks!

I have the 3:92.. After the lag it's amazing, seems like it's in the PCM. Maybe one of the programmers will fix this.

Yeah, I agree that I think it is in the PCM. However, that is something that is going to have to wait. I am a little skeptical to get into programmers myself b/c I don't know much about them. On my Rumble Bee I had a Hypertech programmed and set at a shop and never touched it(truck out of warranty.) I am a little nervous to do it to this truck, but just me.

I have been looking into the Diablo though, it seems like they just keep pushing the programmer back. Anyone have any ideas as to why they are doing this?
