Default Engine Dead, should I go with a short block to save cash?

Not long ago my truck made alot of racket on the interstate and quit, got it towed back home and put oil in it as it showed there was none on the dipstick, started to fill it up and just so happened to look underneath and saw it coming out, found holes and dents in the oil pan. So later on I decided to drop the oil pan and found that the oil pump, a rod and fragments of a piston was lying in the pan.

I got to thinking, and wandering about money and what it would to take to buy a remanufactured engine (which will run $2000 +/-, without labor) or buying a used engine (that will run $850 +/- and install it myself) or my other thought, spend $165 on a short block and use the good parts off of my motor on it.

So in theory I should be able to buy the shortblock for $165, and complete gasket set for $125 and buy another oil pump and slap it together and it should work right?

my engine is a 5.9L Magnum V8 and the short block is too.

As long as that short block has the rest of the internals, yeah this would work. How are your heads and the rest of the bolt on's for the motor?

In theory it should work like like you want. Be prepared for Murphie's Law. Expect the unexpected.

the short block does have all the internals, I'll have to check on the heads.

i would think about replacing the rings & inserts on a used short block & at least do a quick crosshatch ball hone job, if there is no lip at the very top, if there is a lip at the top, use a 3 stone rigid hone on the lip. you may even be able to rent them at the auto parts store
