Default High RPM during Acceleration.

1996 Ram 1500.
I am experience high RPMs while pushing the gas pedal, which make acceleration sluggish. Had a Check Engine light and a coolant leak. Fixed and flushed the coolant system. Change the Air Filter, which go rid of the engine light. Change the oil and oil filter. Still experience the High RPMs. Any ideas? Had a major tune-up in October 2009 and only has 7000 miles on it since then.

Sorry.

Correct. It seems the needle goes higher than before it will shift gears....and lowering the RPMs.

Without being right there to diagnose this, it's hard to pin it down. It may be electronic but I suspect your transmission is slipping.

How many miles on the truck? How many miles since you have changed out the fluid and filter in the trans?

122k miles.

6000-7000 since transmission service.

Shifting into 2nd gear seems to be the probelm..........it wont. Will Rev...high....and then maybe shift.

Was the trans service you had 6000-7000 miles ago the first one? or had it been done as recommended in maintenance schedule? Most of the time if you go way beyond the schedule with the transmission services and then perform them they have issues, and it is actually better to leave it alone. Was it a transmission flush (bad) or fluid/filter change (what you would want)? My dad had an '81 F100 he gave me with 220k miles on it, never had trans service just topped off fluid, I decided to change the fluid, never shifted after that automatically, I had to shift it manually with the gear shifter.

Well I thought it had a fluid change.....doesn't look like it. I changed the Filter and the fluid this weekend. No improvement. it will shift when the engine is cold. Once warm, it won't shift out of first unless it goes passed 3500.
