great write-up. i installed a 300-236 on mine a couple of weeks ago. happy with the results. jegs.com still has them on sale for $194. you'll re-use your factory tube but it wasn't worth $150 plus to me.

With the airraid, k&n, volant, or other CAI's (I know they are each a bit different), has anyone used a throttle body spacer such as the AFE along with the CAI? My question is will the intake tube from the throttle body be hitting the hood when it closes since it will sit higher than just the throttle body without the spacer?

The tube make a big difference, the wrinkles really hurt airflow to the throttle body. The tube doesn't hit the hood and don't waste your money on a TB spacer....I have yet to read one review where it was positive!

Great write up. I was leaning towards the Volant for mine but now might have to reconsider. I especially appreciate the description of the added engine noise. Any one know if the Volants have the same effect on sound?

Good job on the write up. I just installed a K&N 63 Series on my 2011 Ram 4X4 (5.7). Your description of the installation and parts sound very familiar!!
I too checked mileage in both City and Highway driving prior to installation and just returned from my Highway test. I saw an average increase of 3mpg (so far).
I found I probably didn't need to cut the stock air return tube thing that runs from the valve cover to the air intake tube (don't recall what it's actual name is). The supplied tube was much too flexible and crimped shut when I installed it as per instructions. I ended up using the left over stock piece and joined the old and new back together using a piece of the more supple supplied tube.
First drive showed improved throttle response and a noticable change in sound when you put your foot into it. You can also hear the air being sucked in under the hood.
I was also able to quite easily light up the rear tires though to be honest, that's not something I really tried to do in stock form.
One more thing, I mentioned in another thread how a performance shop sales guy told me metal CAI tubes tend to get quite hot thus defeating the purpose of a Cold Air Intake. After driving the truck for a half hour I checked the CAI tube. It was actually cold!! Everything else under the hood was pretty damn hot. I have no idea what material K&N used but it definately works.

cheers,
