Default MDS my BUTT

Had a little highway trip, so I thought I would run with MDS (ECO) on and then run with MDS off on the retrun trip. Well, MDS OFF was 1.6 MPG better than on. I live in WV and I77 is a bit hilly. I also noticed that running with MDS on the truck kicked down a few times on the hills. With MDS off the truck didn't kick down once. I set the cruise control on 75 MPH both ways.
1.6 MPG (17.6 MPG) equates to about $12 or $14 dollars a tank. I figure on flat ground the MDS system would probably work. I just wish there was a way to switch the system around so the default was MDS off and then you can tranny shift MDS on, if you want it. I have gotten into the habit of kicking MDS off whenever I get into the truck.

Seems a few other folks around here are finding out the same thing. It's like the Dodge engineers forgot the world isn't flat...LOL

After reading a similar thread here the other day I've been running in 5 mode as I call it and man it's a whole different truck! I haven't run it long enough like this to see if the mileage is any better but performance wise she is awesome. Made me fall in love with my Ram all over again!

Question #1--- How do you run in 5 mode? Do you shift like it's a manual tranny or does it stay in 5 mode? Actually, what is 5 mode?

Question #2--- My daughter lives in the Morgantown, WV area. With all those hills/mountains, should the MDS be off?

What I call 5 mode is nothing more than putting the tranny into 5th gear and leaving it there. Easiest way is to push the shift lever to the left to drop it into first then push it right until it is showing a 5 in the EVIC. This is the easiest way to keep it out of MDS mode.

Running in MDS is entirely up to the driver. I prefer the responsiveness the truck has not running in MDS.

when you see the number 5 on your dash display, your in 5th gear & MDS can NOT come on, but it will shift normally
MDS works better on flatland, MDS mode is when the engine runs with 4 cylinders disabled, it can only run that way when the vehicle doesn't need any torque basically

I posted the very same issues. Here in Asheville NC my truck gets better MPG not using MDS. I to wish there was a way it was off by default or a mechanical switch that once turn off was left off.

Yep, just start out rolling and when you get a bit of speed push the shifter over to the left and then tap right to get it to 5.

I'd say that the Morgantown area would be a prime candidate for MDS off all the time.

I really wish you could turn the MDS off as default and then if you are in flatland areas, kick it on for the fuel "savings". I think that some of the handheld units may be able to turn it off. Buddy of mine works the service desk at my local RAM dealer. Might ask him if they can turn it off.

By turning off the Tow/Haul option you automatically put the truck in "5 mode", once diablosport has a tune for the 2011's you should be able to turn the ECO mode off as an option... I've also heard the rumor that turning off the ESP can help with gas mileage... anyone have any insight on that?
