Default 4X4 Question

I have never owned a 4x4 vehicle and have never even owned a truck before now. My truck has the 4X4 Hemi and on the dash there is a knob that controls switching it from 2x to 4x but I am wondering if its ok to do this while driving or would that destroy my drive train or something? There are 2 options for 4x4 that I can't think of right at the moment but what is the difference between the 2? Also, why is there a "neutral" button below this 4x4 knob? I don't want to get myself into a situation where I need my 4x4 but don't know how to use it! I plan on driving my ram on the beach a few times every summer.

Switching to 4x4 auto is fine while driving on pavement. The next option is 4x4 high or 4x4 lock. This option is used offroad. You can switch to it while driving also just used offroad. The third is 4x4 low. You should stop and put your truck in neutral to switch to this option. Its for when your offroad in the mud and the mud is BAD. The neutral button below that knob is used when you tow the vehicle, it frees things up on the inside so you wont mess anything up. There is a speed you cant be above before selecting 4x4 auto or 4x4 high/lock. Im not sure what it is but I have changed mine at 25 mph and had no problems.

Just found this in my user manual ipod touch app!

Shifting between 2H and 4H can be made with the vehicle stopped or in motion at speeds up to 55 MPH.

Shifting between 2H or 4H to 4L must be made with the transmission in NEUTRAL and the Vehicle stopped or rolling at 2 to 3 mph

Its amazing what a little research can do right?

Even more amazing (or incredibly ironic) that I can get the user manual for my new truck on my iTouch but I can't get my iTouch to work with the USB port in the glove box of my new truck.

I actually got my 2nd gen itouch to work with the USB twice today.. One time while I had the dodge tech in the truck trying to figure it out and it just started working as we were giving up, and another time when I just went outside to mess around with the truck

This may be a stupid question but when my ram is in 2 wheel drive is it front or rear wheel drive? I am assuming its rear wheel drive since my dads F150 is which can be annoying when it snows... at least if I didn't have 4x4 I guess

Yes, it is the rear wheels. In light snow conditions that just don't seem harsh enough to engage the 4WD, try throwing some weight in the bed (firewood, concrete blocks, sandbags, etc.) and keep it in 2WD.
