Default 5.2 first mod question?

I just purchased a 99 5.2. It has a flowmaster dual exhaust and a rebuilt motor.
What should be my next mod? Whats the best performance gain mod on these motors for the money?

I plan on a cam/headers/springs/pcm tune/etc down the road. So whats a good pre-game plan mod?

Not worried about gas milage. I need some extra power for towing. It's a 4x4, so no plans on a street pounding, 1/4 mile terror.

Thanks

Throttle body mod. (http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=46431)

Check to see if you have a plenum leak. If you see oil when you look inside the throttle body, then you have a blown plenum gasket that's robbing you of power. If you fix it, get the Hughes Engine repair kit (http://www.hughesengines.com/Index/p...3&partid=26190) and do the Kegger mod (http://www.ramforumz.com/showthread.php?t=80192) while you have everything opened up. The plenum is a known problem on these trucks. If you wanted, you could get a different intake manifold that might get you some better power and eliminate the plenum design completely, but from what I've seen on dyno charts, the stock keg style manifold is best for low end power (but can be improved by doing the kegger mod).

Other than that, any cold air intake when added to your exhaust should be a good idea too. Personally, I am going to do the throttle body, kegger, 1.7 Harland Sharp rockers, and an SCT tuner from Hemifever on my 5.9. I don't know if the rockers is a good choice for you if you plan on doing a cam later, nor do I know what ratio to go with on a 5.2 since the valve lift height is different for your engine.

I wouldn't do the tuner until the end because you'll want Hemifever to modify the tune every time you add stuff to the engine. Better to just get everything done and then add the tuner last to make it all work together better.

Kilkenny, thanks very much for the helpful info. The throttle body and intake mod are gonna be my first job.

Throttle body mod is a good one! I'd add some form of cold air intake, headers, maybe a cam and some headwork to your list. B&G Performance can build you a custom tune on a PCM as well. I used them on a prior vehicle and they did a good job.

Thanks maddog. I will prolly do headers, cam, tune, etc.. later down the road. I want to get a good foundation for that first.

Gonna have to do a little saving up, but here is my first step of mods.
Here is my list...
"Air hat" air cleaner and filter
work the throttle body
new belly pan gasket
new wires, plugs, rotor
180 t-stat
See anything else I should do at this stage in the game??

its costly but I have heard from quite a few people that a gear change gives you the most bang for your buck, I cant say from experience though as I havnt changed mine yet...hoping to though!
