Default Paranoid about towing

First I have very little experiance when it comes to towing. I have a 2011 Ram Bighorn it only has the 3.55 gears. The wife and I would really like to get a toy hauler/travel trailer. I am paranoid about destroying my rear end, so I keep looking at smaller and smaller trailers. If I install Timbrens or Airlift bags and use a weight distributing system/hitch. Do you guys think I could safely tow a trailer with a Dry weight of 5,500lbs? In it from time to time I will put an ATV or my Harley that weighs about 800 lbs or so. Should we go smaller yet? I am really regretting not searching harder for a truck with the 3.92s.

you need to know some things before towing
first of all basically the 2011 is the same as a 2009 Ram, but, somehow the 2010 & 2011 Rams can tow more because the government changed the way that they calculate vehicles & what they can tow

if you go to this site, it only goes up to 2009
http://www.dodge.com/towing/D/vehicl...amily=RAM_1500

it reads that the 2009 1500 series can tow 9,150 pounds, but, that is confusing

now when you follow the rest of the web page, it gets down to a more basic break down
look at this page
http://www.dodge.com/towing/D/vehicl...E+Transmission
look for your engine & rear differential
3.55 rear end, you will see 2 different places where it reads 3.55, so i took the LOWEST rating
With 3.55 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio

Curb Weight [i] = 5110 lbs ( truck weight as it comes from the factory & completely empty)
Payload [i] = 1590 lbs ( is what you can put in the Ram, counting people, animals, beer, etc. )

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) [i] = 6700 lbs ( weight of combined payload & curb weight )

Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) [i] = 12000 lbs ( weight of everything totaled up )

12,000 LBS minus 6700 LBS = 5,250 LBS
so your trailer & its load can weigh 5,250 LBS, if my math is right

according to the website, it reads more
With 3.55 Axle Ratio Axle Ratio [i] You Can Tow 6750 lbs, using a CLASS 4 Tow Hitch/Receiver

from the 2011 Ram truck website
http://www.ramtrucks.com/hostc/vsmc/...Code=CUT201113

BIG HORN QUAD CAB 1500 series 2 wheel drive is highlighted

Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - Maximum 6700 lbs. 6700 lbs. 6700 lbs. 6700 lbs.

Payload Capacity - Standard 1810 lbs. 1660 lbs. 1570 lbs. 1570 lbs.

Towing Capacity - Maximum 10250 lbs. 10250 lbs. 10250 lbs. 10250 lbs.

Towing Capacity - Standard 3450 lbs. 7300 lbs. 7300 lbs. 7300 lbs.

it is more confusing then before, its because of the incorrect wording, but, looking at the 2 charts, it looks like the 2nd chart is saying that the trailer & load can weigh 7,300 LBS

According to the ram trucks website a 4x4 QC big horn with 3:55s standard towing capacity is 7100 lbs.
Keep in mind this is a "properly equipped" rating. This usually just means a wieght distributing hitch (5,000 lb rating without typically). The type of WD hitch you need will be determined by your tongue weight and max weight of the trailer.
Your owners manual should tell you the exact ratings. I think you will be fine for the occasional weekend away with 3:55s

Mr. GTYankee ^^^^ nailed the technical aspects of determining tow capacity.

You should be fine. You might want some helper bags depending on the tongue weight you'll have with a loaded trailer.

Definitely a load leveling bar and hitch arrangement on the trailer will help.

A Class IV hitch will give you some additional weight margin of safety.

Reguardless of what the truck will pull, your going to have to stop it. I personally think your fine with the trailer but the use of a WD hitch and brake controler is a must. With the bike or quad in the back, it will change the tounge weight of the trailer depending on where the axles of the trailer are. It usually lessens the tounge weight. Not knowing the specs of your trailer, I can't say for certain though.

I appreciate all the replies and the links, I schooled myself up some with those.
I priced the brake controller at the dealer yesterday they want $300 installed.

Im kind of in the same boat as you I think you'll have no problems. I have a 2009 with 3.92's I pull a 5000lb camper with a 600lb quad in the box. I also run the air bags and bilstein shocks all around. The truck does awesome and suspension is great too.
