Default sounds like a grinding noise?

hey guys im wondering if this has ever happened to one of you guys i have a 98 ram 4x4 with the 318 and 46 re trans and a while ago i got this rattling noise underneath wich i figured was a shield rattling at idle so i didnt even bother with it but when im cruising, the truck at about 45 mph and right after the converter locks up the rpms drop to about 1300 rpms and it sounds like a grinding noise? is coming from underneath?

you can feel and hear this. it vibrates the hole truck not bad but you can feel it through the seat, floor, and steering wheel. and it seems to affect the way the truck accelerates like the time it starts doing it, it seems like the truck is slowing down until you give it a little more gas and the converter unlocks, but does it again when it locks back in. it only does it under those conditions. to me it feels and sounds like the transmission.

what do you guys think?????? I really need some possibilities here

How many miles on the truck/tranny? Has the trans just been service? Rebuilt? Is it coming from underneath your seat or from the back? First thought is the transmission going out but we need more information. Possible transfer case but unlikely from my view. If it's coming from the rear well it be the rearend bearings going out on the pinion.

no its not the rearend it only does it under certain conditions only between 45 and allmost 55 mph and happens after the converter locks up after overdrive. you can feel it in the steering wheel, gas pedal and in my seat. the tranny has i think about 120 or 130 thousand miles on it. it got replaced once allready. the truck has 264000 miles on it. its not the transfer case im pretty sure. it sounds like a grinding and when i give it a little gas it keeps doing it, but when i hit the gas and make the rpm's jump it goes away.

also the rear end has allready been rebuilt so im sure its not the rearend.

its one of those things where you gotta be there to hear or feel it to get the same idea lol.

also another question you guys prolly know that theres a gasket between where the transfer case bolts to the tranny. i have tranny fluid leaking from there. is that a pressurised seal? or is there even supposed to be fluid inbetween the two?

Default i have the same problem

I have the same problem I think. It happens around 45 mph and sounds just like you are riding over the rough bumps on the outside edge of a highway that is supposed to warn that you are going off the road. It almost sounds like gears grinding with a rapid vibration. For me, if I let off the gas and then keep going, the sound and vibration will go away.

My dad said he thinks he may have pulled something with the overdrive on accidentally (it happens to me sometimes because the Overdrive doesn't recall it's last state when you turn the engine off; you have to remember to turn it back off when you restart the engine).

Anyone know what this is and/or how much trouble it would be to fix?

(forgot to mention that I drive a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 2WD)

When was the last time that YOU serviced the transmission?

I have not serviced the transmission. My dad purchased the truck for $1k a couple years ago with a "burned up" engine. He replaced the engine with a used one from a junkyard that only had about "80k" miles on it. He also replaced several other parts but not the transmission...

I believe all of the fluids were changed when the engine was replaced. That's been about 25k miles ago. The transmission currently has 150k miles on it.

Thanks for your assistance

I almost wonder if this could be a bad torque converter starting to go?? Another idea is, have you tried to drive at the same speeds with O/D turned off? if it doesn't happen then, at least you know its O/D and not the whole transmission. just an idea

sounds a lot like what happened to me, check the u-joints, speeds? vibrates when you let off of the gas pedal at certain speeds? be careful when you take em off though, buddy of mine helped me with it and I ended up needing to replace the bracket that mounts on the diff cause he had to smash it with a hammer to get the u-joint out, bone dry when it came apart though, recommend replacing it with servicable u-joints
