Default Tailgate Handle

My 09 Ram Don't have a Key Locking tailgate handle! Can I just buy a new handle from dodge with the lock cylinder and swap it out? I know i'll have to have the key cylinder made up so my key fits it. Thanks in advance for any help.

u need a handle, lock cylinder, and the rods that run from the latches to the handle. i changed mine out not long ago. the cylinder keys itself when u put your key into it.

While you're at it, you might as well add the electronic lock kit. Here
You'll be glad you did. No more keys for the tailgate....

i have the '09 Ram
they make 3 handles for the tailgate
regular with no lock
locking handle
locking with back up camera

the locking handle has a key lock within the handle, your VALET key opens it
the difference between the locking tailgate handle & the regular non locking handle, is the key tumble & a part that goes into the inner workings of the tailgate, no rods to buy, they are the same for locking & non locking tailgates.
the handle with the lock comes with this needed piece
[IMG]

i went with the locking tailgate WITH backup camera & i love it, shows up on my radio screen quite well, especially at night

this is what the non locking tailgate has

gt my non locking handle had different rods than the locking did. i tried to use the existing rods and they weren't even close. at the parts counter they pulled my trucks parts id up to a later models parts id and there r different part #'s on the rods. maybe b/c we used a 2010 id it has a different setup.

I was thinking about putting in an aftermarket lock instead of a the Ram one. Much less money and I actually like the idea of having a separate key for the tailgate if it's parked with a valet.

Cheapest route to go is purchase the Pace Edwards LK170. It is an electronic tailgate lock that works with your OE Remote.

Price Comparison:

PE LK170 - $86 at Realtruck.com (works with a tailgate handle that does not have manual lock)
MOPAR Electronic Lock - For all the components you need to purchase AFTER you purchase the components you need for the manual lock is roughly $113 + $150 for the manual. (It will only work with a manual lock handle.)
MOPAR Manual Lock Tailgate Handle - ALL the components roughly $150

So if you want to save yourself some money go with the Pace Edwards LK170. I have it on my truck, took me about 2 hours to install. Most of that time was routing the wire under the truck. It's a real easy install, and the customer service is outstanding they helped me out a lot.

Note: If you do go with the pace edwards lk170, the installation instructions say TAN/WHITE and TAN/GREEN. This means solid TAN with the other colors as stripes. However dodge is inconsistent with wiring so yours maybe TAN/ORANGE and TAN/PURPLE (mine were). If you need any help just PM me and I can walk you through the install. It's real easy.

I saw those but my question is this; if for any reason there is no power to the lock how do you get in to your bed if you have a cover like the backflip? Is there a backup or does it "fail" in the open position if there is no power?

I can just see having a dead battery but your jump box is locked in the bed. Not trying to be a smart a$$ here, just curious if there is a backup of some kind.

It's easy, you take the end of the wire taps and hook it up to the + and - of a 12 volt battery, one combo will be unlock and the other will be lock.

Basically hot wire the tailgate LOL However, if my battery is dead (likely the most common occurrence for electric lock failure) and I have an extra to open the tailgate with I can probably jump the truck and then I don't have a tailgate problem.

I guess I just don't trust the idea of a lock I can't open with a key; I must be getting old.
