Default Ball mount selection

I'm not new to towing, but am new to buying a ball mount, I've always towed with other peoples vehicles, or my vehicles already had everything setup. I need to buy a ball mount and am trying to figure out what drop/rise I need, and I know it depends on trailer height, but was hoping some of you experts could help me with a general range based on the standard open lawn equipment trailer type stuff. My truck is stock ride height, but I may drop it about an inch or two in the future, if that matters. I have a curt class IV receiver, I know it's overkill for my truck, but I'd rather have something a little beefier than at it's limit, and I want a ball mount that I could tow 8,000lb with if I ever change my gears(the way my truck is currently setup I am rated for 6,250). Again, I'd just rather have the heavier duty one. Any suggestions please I need this fairly soon and only want to buy it once! Thank you.

They make one that allows you to change the height by removing one bolt and moving it to the desired level.

Is that the type that has the notches? Are they rated to tow as much as the others? I've only looked at walmart and don't know where else I can look, I'm really looking for convenience, rather than hunting down a trailer place and spending alot of time figuring out what to get. I'll probably need this in about 2 weeks.

I'd go look at UHaul's website or a UHaul near you. Also, check in with some RV dealers in your area. Both of those sources have everything you need.

Thanks...I looked at the adjustable ones that are aluminum and have the notches, wow they are like $200! That's more than I paid for the hitch! I'm thinking I'll prob need a 2" drop, and I found an aluminum forged/1 piece one on ebay for about $40...I may try Uhaul tomorrow evening.

There are different types of ball mounts. Some are "tube type" which should be used for light duty stuff. Others are "solid" and they are used to pull much heavier stuff. Also a good rule of thumb is that from the top of the ball to the ground should be app. 18". This is only a guide line. Make sure your trailer is level when it is hook-up.
