Default Hardwired Radar Detector: How to

Well after my truck spent a week at the dealership with its reworking, my radar detector installed gained some interest.

So I would thought I would pass on to all just how easy it is. But if you aren't sure what you are doing I could see why it would be intimidating.

1. Mount radar detector where you like it to live, I like mine tucked up nice and tight, with just enough room to access the buttons on top.
2. Cut the cord off with enough length to make it to the passenger side of the RVM (rear view mirror).
3. You will need a small spade terminal, when I first did this mod years ago on a different truck I used a crimp on fork spade terminal and cut one of the forks off, so I had a single pronge. It works, and if that is what you have available you can use it, but it a little thick, so getting it wedged in beside the terminals is tough. I since have gone to using a small length of solid core wire. You could attach this to the stock cord using solder or a crimp on butt connector. Then I take I strip about a 1/2 inch on the end and hit it with a hammer flattening it out nicely. So you end up with compact, very thin terminal that will wedge in perfectly to the OEM connector.
4. Open the little door on the back of the mirror to access the connector, you need one that is keyed on and a ground. On my 2011, keyed on is the pink with green tracer, 4th wire in from the right/bottom top row. Ground is the wire farthest to the right/bottom bottom row.
5. Close up the access door, and tape new wires to RVM wiring loom, so if the detector falls off windshield, which it certainly will, it won't rip out the wires.

Enjoy, wires on the dash are for the novice and kids.

Nice info. I was looking around here a while for that info before I came across it, to also install a hard wired radar detector. Thanks for posting that here so it can be easily found later for others.

What is that accessory you have hanging from the mirror?

Just a little garter action, helps blend it in. And helps the wife feel the love.

Great idea!
I am going to use this idea for another application.
I am a volunteer firefighter. This would work great for powering the emergency light in my truck.
Right now I have a wire going across the headliner, tucked in behind the trim on the A pillar, under the dash, and then plugged into the accessory plug in the console.
I would do this for a radar detector, but sadly, they are illegal here.

Great idea!! Did you have to cut or drill a small hole in the access door on the back of the mirror for the wires?

Thanks for the info. Just did this but it took about an hour. Just couldn't get that spade in the plug. Smashed the spade with a hammer to flatten it then it went right in. Love it no drilling. Should have taken me 15 minutes...

Check this mount out. BlendMount 2000 Series Mount for Beltronics / Escort radar detector. Goes on back of mirror. I used a telco cable to connect to mirror power.
