Default 34" Muffler?

Hey all,

Got my first 2001 Dodge Ram a few months back, and it's about time for the muffler to be replaced (all the piping is solid, but the muffler is falling apart).

It seems exceptionally long (34" when measured), and after spending some time researching mufflers (Flowmaster in particular), I've found that this is a less than common size for Ram 1500 mufflers.

Any of you pros know the history behind this? I'm assuming this is stock. Why so long, and why so uncommon in the after-market market place? Any recommendations for what to swap this out with? The next biggest size I could find is the Flowmaster 50 or 70 (big block?).

Thanks for the help. Very interested in getting to the bottom of this.

That is rediculously large! I used a Magnaflow muffler on my truck....prefer the design and quality over Flowmaster...but it is only an 18" body. They make a 24" length that is 30" overall length.

The reason the stock muffler is so long is so that it makes the exhaust quieter. The longer or bigger the muffler the more quiet it will be. And that's the reason you don't see aftermarket mufflers that long. My recommendation for you is to swap it out with what you want as far as sound. If you want it quiet go with another o.e.m. muffler. If you want some rumble go with a 40 series Flowmaster.

Thanks gents. I think I'll go with a Flowmaster 70 (smaller than OEM).

Small follow up question: Does muffler size/type have any effect on performance (besides noise level)? I've just started looking at glass packs/cherry bombs and I'm wondering where those fit in? I know they reduce backpressure, but is volume the reason that most people don't have them?

All you'd need to do is get a muffler and add a straight piece of pipe to make up for the difference!
