Question A/C Issue when pressing on gas

I was hoping y'all could help me out with addressing an issue that I have with the A/C in my 1998 1500 5.2L. When the A/C is on and I press on the gas, I hear the flap in the dash moving and changing it to the defroster. When I let up on the gas, it switches back to A/C.

I'm hoping this is an easy issue to fix without taking off the dash as mine is cracked and I'm trying not to cause any more damage. If it does require going under the dash, maybe I'll address both issues at once.

Any help here is greatly appreciated.

Dave

I've had the same issue. Turned out to be a broken vacume line. I found mine while undernieth changing oil. It was the cluster connecting to the transfer case. Repaired the line and everything was okay.

I just want to say that this forum has helped me yet again. I took my truck in and had the vacuum lines checked and the line for the A/C was definitely broken. The mechanic had it replaced in just a few minutes. My A/C is now working GREAT!!! THANKS TO MOPARDOUG FOR HIS SUGGESTION!

This particular problem is literally all over the Dodge truck threads, from several posts in the heatiing & cooling forum to here in engine issues. It obviously is a very common problem affecting many owners and one which is usually quite easily (and inexpensively) fixed. 99.9 % of the time it's a broken vacuum line somewhere in the engine compartment or else a defective (leaking) vacuum check valve.

Shade Tree Mechanic's Diagnostic tip: With the engine running you can sometimes locate a not-so-obvious broken vacuum line with a spray can of ether. The ether will usually kill the engine when sucked in through a vacuum line.

Can you still buy ether or has our Gum'mnt outlawed that too?
