Well well well, normally I am not one to gripe about paying for things. After all, its the right thing to do. If you want something, you pay for it. We are all (normal, good people anyway) taught this at the youngest of ages.
But what about paying for something you didnt want...and whats worse, not even knowing you paid for it? American's, and indeed the rest of the world, pay out quite a bit of cash every year, for things they do not need, and sometimes, things they dont want, without ever even knowing it.
A perfect example is my truck. I did not buy it new, but somebody sure did. I have the build sheet in my hand this morning as I am cleaning out the truck. It says that these:
The black "paint" in between the windows on the doors is an option. I thought to myself "well thats stupid." Then I read further. To my pure astoundment, the original owner of this 2009 Ram 1500 paid $38,977 (sticker) for this truck. But that wasnt the worst of it. $500 of it, was the black "paint" between the door windows.
Turns out, the "paint" is actually not paint, it is vinyl overlay. And expensive vinyl overlay at that! $500? Here is what was under it:
Perfectly good, Deep Water Blue Pearl paint (which incidentally, is also a $425 option). Looks better my way, I think. Why cover up a gorgeous color like DWBP with something as awful as black vinyl? It also has me wondering, just how much other BS car companies (and maybe even other manufacturer's) have us paying for things... Things that we don't even know we are paying for, and if we did, we would have passed, given the option.
I will say, as a mod, its pretty cool to get free shit...unless you find this halfway through:
That would be a masking line, where a body shop didnt remove the overlay to paint the door, instead they just masked it off. Cheaper? Yes. Just as effective? Possibly, unless you get a nosy truck owner who likes to change stuff. Right way to paint? Definitely not. Best way to fix it? Its just the passenger front door, the others are flawless.
Oh and uhhh...Discuss the topic at hand. Just how much crap do we not even know we pay for?
