Default Thoughts of infidelity...

I know I haven't been around in a while but work has been keeping me busy and the last thing I want to do at home is play on the computer. As some of you may have seen, I'm selling my truck. This is my second Ram Hemi back-to-back so I've essentially been driving the same gas hog for 7 years. Call it the 7-Year-Itch. Not to mention the fact that paying for gas is depressing. I test drove some certified Tundras and let me tell you this, seeing how they ride/drive after 3-4 years and 60,000ish miles, I'm glad I didn't buy one new! I am thinking of a certified Tacoma or the ugly Colorado though. Something a little cheaper at the pump AND I'm wanting to get my payments down so my budget is $20,000. My wife thinks it is the dumbest thing a person could do to trade a truck for a truck to save money. Sure, in that verbage it might sound bad. I think the payment savings alone going from $30,000 to $20,000 would be fantastic and the small savings in gas would just be a bonus. She thinks I should get the VW GTI, Chevy Malibu or Hyundai Genesis Coupe to really get some fuel savings to make the trade worth while. I know me and I know with 95% certainty that I would not be happy in a car, almost any car. I say shave some off the payment with a cheaper truck and a little off the gas bill with a v6 would keep me happy. I don't want to pay for something I don't want. What do you think?

While payment, gas, and money in general are all excellent factors when buying a vehicle, I can almost guarantee this....if you buy a vehicle that you don't particularly care for, you will be sick of it in short order. You don't have to hate it...if it's just not really what you want it will happen. If you are a truck man you will be sick of a car in no time at all. Then you start looking for and wishing you had something else. Trust someone who has been there and done that. I sold my F150 cuz I thought I wanted a sports car and because the gas and payment were cheaper. Got sick of not having a truck and bought a Colorado which was a step in the wrong direction on gas and payment but not as much as my F150 was. Got sick of not having a full size truck and bought my Ram. I love my Ram (a lot more than the F150) but now I'm upside down from all the trading and my payment is more than it was with the F150. Gas is about the same, lol.

Anyway, you have to look at whatever you buy everyday for a pretty good while. Keep that in mind. Good luck!!

I will say that i have not owned a Ford, except as buy, repair, quick sell vehicle since back around 1970

Last month i drove 190 miles out into the desert & i filled up in Yuma Arizona, then drove back to San Diego & filled up again. 89 octane, right around $75
Another guy that drove his Ford Ranger on the same trip, not sure of the engine or year, put only $7 in his truck in Yuma & it was full, he only uses 87 octane
Needless to say, he made a bigger profit on that job than i did, just because of fuel cost

Why not consider trading up to a 4th gen HEMI RAM. The milage is better and you won't have to give up on a truck. I'm easily over 21 MPG on the highway and could not be happier.

I don't think him trading up to a 4th gen will give him much more peace of mind. I think if you look at the numbers this will give you a better idea of how to approach this.

Based on AAA average annual mileage lets say 15,000 yearly. (Texas gas about $3.53)

4th GEN Ram 13 City 19 Highway with the Hemi (Average 16MPG Annual cost $3,309.38= 22cents a mile)

2009 Colorado 17 City 23 Highway I5 3.7L (They dont have a V6) (Average 20MPG Annual cost $2,647.50=17.6cents a mile)

2009 Malibu 22 City 30 Highway I4 2.4L (Average 26MPG $2,036.54=13.6cents per mile)

The difference between the Malibu and the 4th GEN Ram is $1,300 a year and obviously less if you don't drive 15,000 miles a year. So you save about 8.5 cents for every mile you drive the Malibu vs the RAM.

You also only save $900 between the RAM and the Colorado. Honestly just by calculating this out for you I don't feel bad about getting rid of my Lancer which got an average of 24MPG. I mean I blow the difference on stupid stuff half the time anyway.

I also wish I lived in Texas those gas prices are awesome in comparison. Hope this help with your decision maybe show it to your wife, that your not really saving a ton over the year. Especially if you lose money on the trade.

Best of Luck.

Thanks for the input everyone. My wife looks at a vehicle as JUST a car. Sure they depreciate like crazy, but it is still an investment to me because they aren't cheap and modding is a hobby for me. I think my mind is pretty much made up on shooting for a Colorado or Taco. I just have to find the right one. Starquest, I have been in the same boat as you with all the trading and getting too far upside down. I went from a F-150 to a Cavalier back in '01 then had to trade for a stripped S-10 just to get back into some kind of truck and then my payment was about $15/month more for the stripped S-10 than what I was paying for the extended cab XLT F-150! I follow (and agree with) your logic Rans on getting a 4th gen, but I do almost no highway driving so I have to look at all the lowside mileages. LeKy, I got gas last night for $3.44. I'm not sure why, but the DFW metroplex is almost always a good bit cheaper than the state average.

I agree with what has been said here so far and if you're a truck guy, you definitely won't be happy with a car, I know I wouldn't be after two Ram's and a Jeep lol. As a V6 Ram owner, what I can say is, yes, my payment is lower than most with the bigger, trimmed out truck with the HEMI, and while I'm satisfied with my gas mileage (I average 16 mpg mixed driving but more highway than not), it's still a half ton truck. I had a Jeep Compass between Ram's and yes, I miss 30 mpg lol, but missed having a truck. Also depends on what and how you use your truck/need it for as I'm sure you know, but either a Ram with a few less features and smaller engine or maybe even a Dak might be possibilities as well, but good luck man and keep us posted.

jeez...just get a Chevy Volt! No gas at all and very little electricity to charge it..... AND also a padded forehead pad so when your beating your head against the steering wheel asking yourself...why....why....why... did I get rid of the RAM, you won't give yourself a concussion...

I miss DFW's awesome gas prices. Being home on leave was great. LOL.

I made the mistake of selling my 02 ram for cheaper fuel costs, now three vehicles (hundia elantra, GMC canyon, and today 2011 ram), was a huge mistake. All I'm sayin' is be careful and good luck.
