Question Water Pump went and transmission was weird.

I just bought a 04 Dodge Ram 3500 DRW Quad Cab (4 Doors) with 110,500 miles on the 5.9 Cummings Diesel with 3.73 rear and a 4 speed transmission with lock-up torq-converter . I was pulling my 3 horse goose neck trailer up a steep hill with tow/haul on. The speed of the truck was 15 or 20 miles per hour, so I gave the truck some throttle. The transmission seemed to have an issue, switching between 2 and 3 gear. I backed off the gas and it chose 2nd gear and we went up the hill. Once on the flat level road, the problem seemed to go away. No warning lights came up on the dash. At our destination I smelled antifreeze. I looked at the truck and saw no leaks, just nothing in the overflow tank. I went to get some antifreeze from the parts store and the water pump was leaking.

So my question is, was my transmission "slipping" or was the truck "confused" as to what gear it wanted? The temp gauge never went above 200 degrees. Any ideas?

My experience with these trucks is that you were just at the right speed. Like shifting in and out of overdrive at around 40mph around town. Nothing to worry about.
