Question Cold air intake

I have an '11 5.7 ram big horn and I was looking to add a cold air intake to it. My biggest question is will it do any damage to the motor?
I was talking to an engineer from chevy who works with motors and they have seen damage from CAI's and their motors. Create's a lean condition and fries the pistons. I don't want that to happen to my truck and was wondering if anyone has seen this with the Hemi?
If I do install one, is there anything I have to do to compensate for the increase in air?
Thanks

I've run CAI's on two HEMI's and have had no problems. 4 years on the SRT, more than a year on the RAM.

I do have a programmer on both and found the HEMI runs pretty lean in stock trim. Adding more air can lean it out a bit more so adding a programmer will insure you can add some fuel to the mix to avoid the super lean condition.

There are ways around the too lean condition. In your case, when a programmer comes out that can add fuel and that you can tune with, you are good to go.

Thanks for the response. If I run the programmer and cai, what will that do to my economy? Unfortunately I put miles on my truck so I need to get good mileage out of it.
Also, what's the best cai out there?

After installing the programmer, intake and exhaust on my HEMI (The Big Three), my highway mileage improved 4+ mpg and I don't drive it slow. I suppose if I set the cruise below 75 I'd get even better mileage. You can see the before and after dyno results in my Ram Mods link below, pg 2.

My around town mileage has improved by 3 MPG.

Remember, if you are bringing more air in, it's a good idea to move more air out. Even a muffler change to a freer flowing unit will do the trick. You don't need to do a full catback. Without a freer flowing exhaust, you won't see the improvements in performance and mileage the "Big Three" will get ya.

Most CAI's will do the same thing. I run an AFE but the Mopar accessory cold air intake, a K&N, or Volant will do the trick. Just don't get one of those cheapy eBay things. They have really cheap filters that come apart and you'll end up with pieces of it in your engine. Also, the tubes are cheaply made, and don't locate the IAT sensor in the optimum spot.

Here's a great thread put together by RootBeer on CAI's that some good info on CAI's that will help you make your buying decision:

Thanks for the info. With those MPG improvement numbers I can probably convince the boss(wife) that I NEED to make some mods.
