Default Do You Have a Vehicle Cam?

This is becoming more and more popular, especially with the increase in accident frauds and liability. I have used one in each of my vehicles for the past 3 years now, heck I even have one for the boat to record fishing trips without having to juggle a camcorder.

I have been running a dashcam for about 6 months now. With the stupid people out there its worth it just for the piece of mind.

I have a DVR-207 and have it hard wired with a 32gb card. It records in 10min sections, comes on automatically when I start the vehicle, shuts off when I shut the vehicel down. Has IR lights (you can turn them off) and can be set to come on when it senses movement if you want. When the card gets full it automatically deletes the oldest file and continues recording (one big 3-4 hour loop). It records in 1080p at 30fps. Good mid quality for the money. It was about $70 delivered to my door.

About the same specs for mine, although I can not remember the models
Additionally mine do both front and back (interior of cab) and provide GPS coordinates and speed. I use 64 Gig card for about 6-8 hours recording time before the loop.

The cam itself is about 4"X1" with a 2.7" LCD. Mine is 1st generation HD (720P) with 64 Gig card, No IR lights/lens. I will provide some links at the end that will be helpful in any assessment for one's needs.

The price variation is extreme, some are now going for twice as much as I paid and one company has two variations - one with a 32 gig card and another with 64 gig, the 32 gig is only 480P.

720P/32 Gig http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Dual-lens-2-7...item23231a533f

480P/64 Gig http://www.ebay.ca/itm/2-7-140-Dual-...item256860b932

As we know cameras out date themselves very quickly, there is now an encoder or company standard called Ambarella - I still have to research this. I strongly suggest that you look at something with 1080P and the next link will take to to Youtube to a guy that has done extensive reviews on various dash cams. If you get a chance try to see a few of his reviews, he really goes into explaining the quality of IR video and how it is lacking in the dash cam market.

Techmoan Review

There are many options, to me two of the best are a GPS feed and capable of wireless audio or at least being able to plug in a wireless receiver into the audio.

Myself, when I am due to upgrade I will be looking at an external DVR capable of accepting at least 4 feeds, including audio, can be hidden away from the cameras and can take a 64 Gig card.

Thank you for the info. I've kinda hummed and haaaa'ed about getting one. Just because you never know... But I've always been concerned about the video quality, cost and size. I'd definitely want something that you'd be able to read a license plate. But I also don't want one that is huge. And of course, cost is a factor.
I looked at a review of the GW1 and it seems like it takes a pretty good video... But the sellers on eBay are all 98%... I usually don't deal with anyone unless they're >99%. But maybe I'll take a chance. Of course, not until I check out your links though!

When you check out the videos take some time to check out that guy's other videos, very informative. As I alluded to in the earlier post, most cameras have trouble with IR, best way to explain is that it records in daylight with the IR still on, this gives distorted colour.

As for being able to read a licence plate number, this is a minor point, at least here in Canada. Our jurisprudence is such that your own "viva voce" (spoken vocal testimony) evidence is the preferred evidence. Anything else you bring to the table is corroborating evidence. If it has voice recording you can always speak out the licence plate number as you see it, for recollection purposes, the video will tell the rest.

Here is a video I grabbed from this morning's news in Ottawa. It depicts two drivers, both being jerks (IMHO), however the one with the video is definitely the dumber of the two (never argue with a bus)

As for seller ratings, yes the higher the score the better, however, by paying with PayPal you do get their protection.
