Default 01 Ram Quad 4x4 - Morning Starting Issues

Hello All,

I have an 01 Quad Cab 4x4 Sport with the 5.9L engine. If the truck sits without being started (overnight) I have to turn the key multiple times to engage the starter. The problem seems to be getting worse, taking longer to start.
I have had the battery, alternator and starter checked at the local Autozone. No issues
I have placed a charger on the battery overnight and still had the same problem. I can hear the fuel pump kick in but that's the only sound until the lucky key turn that starts the engine.
I'm at the ignition switch, solenoid, relay level and looking for some advise on how to proceed. Should I try to jump from battery to starter solenoid with the key in the on position and work my way back or should I start at the ignition switch or some other place? Any advise would be highly appreciated.

Also, is there a way to check codes without a code reader. Not sure these would help but couldn;t hurt. If I hold the OD trip button in on my wife's minvan I can get some codes.

Thanks,

Bill

To check your engine codes:
Turn the key to ON (not start), OFF, ON, OFF, ON and leave it there. If you look in the odometer window the codes will flash any code(s) with a small delay between each result. Each code should be in a P#### format, and will say PDONE when completed - turn your key to OFF and remove. Use the OBD code list to determine what problem the computer detected.

To reset your engine codes:
Remove the negative terminal of your battery (10mm wrench).
Turn your ignition key to START and hold it there for about 15 seconds.
Turn your ignition key to OFF and remove it.
Connect the negative terminal of your battery.

if you pull a code like i do without the light being on from time to time the code list is in above link

sounds like you have a bad ignition signal wire. possibly coroded. test the wire going from the ignition to the starter.

Check your starter relay it may be going bad and having trouble energizing. Herei is the procedure straight from the FSM.DIAGNOSIS AND TESTING - STARTER RELAY
The starter relay (Fig. 13) is located in Power Distribution
Center (PDC). Refer to PDC cover for relay
identification and location. For complete starter relay
wiring circuit diagrams, refer to 8, Wiring Diagrams.
(1) Remove starter relay from PDC.
(2) A relay in de-energized position should have
continuity between terminals 87A and 30, and no
continuity between terminals 87 and 30. If OK, go to
Step 3. If not OK, replace faulty relay.
(3) Resistance between terminals 85 and 86 (electromagnet)
should be 75 6 5 ohms. If OK, go to Step
4. If not OK, replace faulty relay.
(4) Connect 12V battery to terminals 85 and 86.
There should now be continuity between terminals
30 and 87, and no continuity between terminals 87A
and 30. If OK, perform Relay Circuit Test that follows.
If not OK, replace faulty relay.

A slightly faster way to check if the relay is faulty, is to swap it with either the trailer or blower relays. They are right beside the start relay, and look the same.

Check the connection at the starter. The terminal could be corroded.
