Default My First Tow this week

I purchased my 2011 Ram 1500 specifically for towing. according to the window sticker it has the LSD, 3.92 gears, 4x4 and 5.7 liter. I have to say that I was not impressed with the towing on this truck. I got on average 8 MPG going from VA to NC to West TN and back to VA. Obviously crossing some mountains but it had to drop into 3rd gear and run up to nearly 5k RPMs. The trailer was approx 3700 lbs loaded and I was using a Load distributing hitch.

Does this sound normal? I'm considering buying a travel trailer that will weigh in at 7100 lbs loaded but if this is now it handles 3700 lbs I won't be able to keep speed.

Any thoughts? How do I confirm the rear gear? I can't seem to find the window sticker at this time.

Eric

I can't speak from personal experience but something doesn't sound right. I know a couple of guys with that setup that are towing a hell of a lot more weight and don't have any issues what so ever.

Ok so I found the window sticker and it does say 3.92 gears. I'm also getting noise from the drive train somewhere. Its like a dull hum or muffled grind sound. It occurrs between 35 and 50 mph under light acceleration but goes away when I let up off the gas. at 4600 miles I think it is time for a trip to the dealership. And to think this was my first new vehicle.

I also checked and the trailer was actually closer to 4100 lbs but still the GVWR should be 10250 for this setup. Another thing that is bugging me is that the door sticker says the GVWR is only approx 7k lbs. Shouldn't that take into account the gear ratio?

None of that sounds like it makes sense. I have a 6x12 at a bit over 3000 lbs., not as much as you but not far off. I recently went through the Poconos and only occasionally did I even need the Tow/Haul mode. I averaged about 13 mpg.

Note that the trailer is a rental and I am now beginning to suspect that the trailer brakes might have a problem. I'm bringing the trailer back tomorrow morning so we will see. I checked the temps on the hubs by feel. 1 of them felt a little hotter than the others but there was no smoke or burning like I've seen in the past with uhaul trailers when the brake wasn't unlocked. When going down even a 4% grade I wasn't getting an increase in speed. Who knows. If I find out that it was the trailer someone is going to be providing me some gas money. Thats All I can say about that.

If you were in Tow Haul mode, it disables MDS which will hurt your gas mileage. I have hauled trailers in the 3-4K range and averaged close to 15 mpg in regular mode. I took it easy up hills, and coasted as fast as it wanted to within reason down the other side.

Also, there was a recall on the rear differential on the 2011's, I think K36 or something. You may want to mention that to your dealer.

if you have a fill/check plug in the rear cover of your rear end, that recall does NOT affect you
you can see it by kneeling down near your trailer hitch & looking under your spare tire at the rear end center cover plate

to confirm your rear end ratio, when the truck is new & has not seen too much rainy weather, there will still be a paper sticker on the right rear axle housing, between the tire & the center pumpkin

another thing to consider, if you plan on doing any heavy towing, think about getting a after market cover that will give you a larger fluid capacity,
the Ram covers have to be taken off to change out your fluid, the fluid is synthetic gear oil, so when you are ready to change fluid, that would be the best time to change covers. Then you could get a larger capacity cover with a drain hole & magnetic plug
