No such thing as stupid questions, we're all here to learn and help where possible. DSP is Diablo Sport Predator, tuner. Not sure about the Trinity, haven't heard many reviews on it from folks here.

DSP = DiabloSport Predator. The Trinity is a DiabloSport product that features the same programming options as the Predator with the addition of some real time monitoring screens to look at while you drive.

I have a hard time justifying the additional expense of the Trinity.

I would say the Predator is definitely worth the money!

And starquestbd22, in answer to your question I've been running a Predator on my truck for 1.5 years and the car for almost 4 years. No transmission problems here!

OK. Now my dumb question. From reading this thread, if someone does a tune (say 93 tune) and runs gas with less octane, will it screw up your engine or will your engine just not perform well?

it will perform badly, and you will get pinging/detonation. usually it wont hurt if you stop right away, especially at low rpms. If you have the 93 perf tune on and fill up with 87 then head out and get on the gas to accelerate and hear it detonating and realize whats going on you can let off the gas and will be ok. It would probably be fine idling/light throttle, but under a load and heavy throttle it would definitely detonate.

snrusnak....Seems like we kind of have the same conversation going on in two different threads, lol. Anyway, I was wondering...are you running the stock thermostat or have you switched to the 180? I didn't see it on your mods list or anything so I'm assuming stock. If that is the case, have you ever been able to make it ping/detonate while running the 91 performance with 93 octane?

I noticed that you have a cold air intake on your truck, and I wanted to ask if you or anyone has experience their truck to run lean or if the diablo Trinity would compensate for that.

While using the 91 tune with 93 fuel I have had no issues with detonating. I'm sure if I tried to tow something with some real weight it would detonate. I've pulled a little utility trailer I don't know what it weighed probably just a few hundred pounds, no issues there. Also no issues hauling about 500lbs. You're not supposed to pull alot of weight in the performance mode, so if I were to put anything over 1000lb I'd retune it, and if I was going to have anything back there over 500lb on a long trip I'd also retune it for the trip. I like the 91 tune using 93 fuel, it runs very strong and leaves a little safety margin.
As far as the cold air intake causing the engine to run lean...this won't happen. The computer will read the temperature and amount of air entering the engine and will compensate the fuel being injected accordingly. The intake has an intake air temperature sensor, there is also a manifold absolute pressure sensor (I think these engines use the MAP setup, as there is no mass air flow sensor...), and the oxygen sensors that all work together to read these conditions then the computer will make the adjustments, so in short it will automatically keep the proper air fuel ratio.

I was not aware of the pulling problems with tunes. If that is the case, then I could never have a tune. There is only about 4 weeks out of a year that I'm not pulling something. The lightest being 1,400 pounds. My trailer alone weights 1,200 empty. I would hate to have to keep doing a retune every time.

Yeah they get the added power mainly by advancing the timing, which under heavy load will detonate. You'd benefit greatly from the tow tune though, if you tow/haul that often. The manufacturers of the tuners warn you greatly about not towing/hauling in the performance modes. The tow tune is great, I tried it for about a week or two, I believe they actually retard the timing to allow heavy loads without detonation. You can really tell there is more power down low, and the adjusted shift schedule is great. I hardly ever tow/haul, so it just isn't for me, if I'm filling up with 93 I want to get all the performance I can, but if I towed/hauled often I'd definitely run the tow tune.
