Default Check Engine Light and RPM trouble

Hello,

I currently have a check engine light on and my RPMs while idling is way below normal. So, here is the story:
About a week ago the check engine light came on. It was way overdue for a tune-up so I took it in and had that done thinking that after it was done it would turn the light off. It didn't. Also, I didn't notice it before the tune-up, the RPMs while idling would be around 500 (normally would be around 1000) and would also drop down to 300 and then back up to 500. Then two days ago, I went to start it and it turned over and then died. I had it taken into a shop and they looked at it and said it was an IAC sensor wire that came loose. They plugged it back in, reset the system, and the light went off. Today as I was coming home from work, the check engine light came back on and the RPMs have dropped a little. Not as drastic as before but down to 700-800. Any ideas on what it could be? Thanks.

Drop by an auto parts store like advance and have them read the code that is setting off your CEL. Then they or someone here can point you in the right direction.

I stopped by an Auto Zone and they got the code. It comes up as P0442 Evaporative Emission (EVAP) System Small Leak Detected. I went ahead and replaced the gas cap because the rubber seal was cracking. The CEL is still on. They tried to erase the code but it would not let them.

If that fixed the problem, then after 3 starts and engine warming cycles the CEL should go out.

If not, then there is another leak in your evap hose somewhere.

I had to do replace that in my truck about a year or so ago, there are 2 small hoses back there that crack/rip over time, I would go ahead and replace them both... they are really cheap even if you get them from the dealer.......... And you should be able to get your own codes to flash on the dash by moving the key back and forth rapidly 3 times........

And I don't know that those couple small hoses would have any affect on your engine idle... I also had issues with the idle speed fluctuating... I would go to the autoparts store, pick up some MAF sensor and throttle body cleaner and clean those items.... I did that and the idle has stayed steady since......
