Default Hemi vs Cummins

Ok, so I just got back from a 1300 mile trip through the Appilacian Mts towing a 10,000 lb trailer with my 2010 Ram 1500 4x4 Laramie. I had beefed up the suspension with air bags inside the rear coil springs and E rated tires to provide that little bit of insurance for the 980 lb tongue weight. Gas mileage with the Hemi was 7.9 mpg burning 89 - 92 octane. I monitored the oil temp, trans temp, etc and sometimes it got a bit warmer than ideal but for the most part, not too bad. Pulled hills pretty good and never really ran out of power although engine RPMs sometimes were pretty high. All in all, it performed better than I expected and so here is the question...

How does my Hemi (390hp w/ 425 ft/lbs of torque) match up to the Cummins (350hp w/ 800ft/lbs)? I mean, if I traded my truck in for a 2500 Cummins, what would be the noticeable difference? I pulled the long hills with no problems, the ride was smooth, and it didn't feel like it was ever getting away from me. Is the 2500 Cummins worth the price differential? I pull this trailer 4 or 5 times a year about 1000 miles each time. The rest of the time, its a no load trip to the office and back. Give me some input. I'd like to hear from the veteran haulers.

I believe if you did a back to back test you would buy the cummins.

I think you'd find the Cummins will pull the trailer easier due to the torque of the engine but there's a trade off...the Cummins will have a higher maintenance cost.

If I was towing that load all the time I'd go to the Cummins but 4 or 5 times a year really doesn't justify the higher acquisition cost nor the increase in maintenance costs.

Your HEMI can handle that load just fine.

I would maybe consider a 2500 Hemi instead of the 1500. Their timing/tune is different then the 5.7 in the 1500s

I'm with Maddog. If you are only pulling it 4-5 times a year I'd stick with the 1500. The 2500 won't ride as nice, diesel fuel isn't cheap and the diesel motor comes with a hefty price tag.

4th gen HEMI is 390hp/407q...but who's counting.

I also will agree with Maddog; the Cummins will definitely pull better but for a few times a year it's probably not worth it. The rest of the time the Hemi is less expensive and more civilized.

Is the truck also your daily driver? If so, how far do you drive on average each day?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to just by a $300 tuner than a 2500?
I know the diffs are better too, but for engine tuning that's a simple fix.

I bet you could buy a lot of goodies for the price difference, starting with intake, exhaust and a tuner.
I dont tow with my 10', but I tuned it from a 15 sec truck to a 13 sec Beast with those most basic mods.

Hey BlackRamHemi, whats the deal with the 180* stat?? I'm just curious if you're running it to keep things cooler on the strip or whats going on there?

Yes mainly for the track, I can add more timing and more power with my tuner with a cooler running engine.
Very popular cheap $27 fix to drop a couple tenths for most who know drag racing
I do run it all year round though, even in cold Canadian Winter temps (-35º) with no negative effects.
