Default Manual Shifting???

Ok, just when I thought I had it down about shifting my 5 speed auto manually this is what's happening.

Before I start out I set the manual shifter at 4th gear so it doesn't go beyond that.

However, when I take off starting in low it will go to 2nd., then 3rd. and stay there. It will not go into 4th.

If I set it at 3rd. gear it will go to 2nd. and stay there.

Now I know I didn't forget how to count.

If I just use Drive it will keep shifting up all the way to 5th.

What Gives

You're catching the 2nd prime short shift, the evic doesn't have an indicator for it though so it reads it as 3rd.

2nd prime is also used as a kick down (passing gear) when your at highway speeds

545RFE Gear Ratios:

1st 3.00:1
2nd 1.67:1
2nd Prime 1.50:1
3rd 1.00:1
4th 0.75:1
5th 0.67:1

Reverse 3.00:1

If you use Tow/Haul mode it does the same thing 1-2, 2-2pr, 2pr-3 in a quarter mile run , even though the evic reads 4th

Here's a vid I shot last year with my Bully Dog GT and you can hear the 2nd prime shift

and here's what it looks like on the Tach...

So this is likely a dumb question, but what is '2nd prime'?

unless i'm mistaken, it's lockup..
no loss between the torque convertor input/output

ya i think i'm mistook
if it's something that does occur on the track it can't/shouldn't be cuz lockup shouldn't happen under that kind of a load

k i guess i'm not mistook...
here i was editing and i was right all along.."doh"

still, weird it would lockup under a "drag" style load...maybe just old skool thinking anyway but the only time you could get lockup (C5, 904, 200, 350 etc etc) was when you were driving granny (like when getting ECO to kick in)

So is there one in 4th gear? I notice that when I shift to 4th gear it drops slightly (like 250RPMS) and then shifts into 5th.

i believe 5th gear itself is again a lockup

hope i'm not gonna shoot myself in the foot here BUT IMO all this talk of 5 and 6 speed trannies is bunk, i'm thinking they're mechanically 4 speeds with multiple lockups
like the old A4LD by ford was 1-2-3-OD with a lockup in 3rd and OD...did that make it a 6 speed too? same for the 200R4 and 7004R
i'm puzzled too by the ratios..in pristine conditions sure but if you're under any kind of load there's a loss to that ratio in the slipping of the torque convertor...the ratio becomes variable except when IN lockup as it becomes 100% mechanical
like when they came up with these numbers did the remove or add the hydro factor when they deemed it convenient or....

k, my brain hurts
