Default getting ready for a long haul

ok so far i have towed alot with my ram. i have 3.55 gear in it fyi. i tow a 2000-2500 pound boat pretty much every weekend and thats 100 miles per trip. my dad used it to tow his 7-8000 pound boat bown the shore and i towed my camper once. the camper is about 3000 pounds and the last trip wasnt very far. this trip with the camper is to virginia beach and its about 6 hours. the camper does have electric brakes on it but i dont have the controller on my truck to use them, is it worth it for that light of a trailer? i guess i should just keep a eye on the trans temp?what is a good temp for towing? the only reason i ask is because my dad blew the tranny out of his 99 dodge with 80k miles on it towing a 6-7k boat from florida. any info or tips would be hepfull. i guess im going to just set the cruise on 65 put it in tow haul and go.

Keep it in tow haul mode and consider getting a brake controller in the future.

Can you check your trans temperature? If so, normal operating temp is 180 degrees. Of course, running down the road with no load it will be lower. Towing a heavy load, up a lot of hills, I would expect it to approach or exceed 200 degrees. This is not a dangerous temp but it would be prudent to take a break and let it cool a bit if it gets past 215.

in some states its illegal to tow any type of trailer without electric brakes. If you have them on the trailer why not take advantage of them? plus it would take a load off the truck brakes.

I would also agree the brake controller is something you should consider. For the 2011, you should be able to add the factory brake controller which plugs right in for less than $130. Not bad money spent imho.

I'd get a t/b controller. Consider it cheap ($125) insurance to what could go wrong.

I bought this one and installed it in the factory location. it comes with the correct harness too.

You can get the factory brake controller, and the bezel trim piece (depending on which color interior you have) from a couple different Mopar accessory stores. I ordered mine online from Mopar-wholesale cause other members here had good luck with them. My controller and bezel was around $130 delivered in a couple of days. Installation couldn't have taken more than 10 minutes.

Now I did not have mine "flashed" yet. This would allow the truck's EVIC system to recognize the brake controller and be part of the display in the dash. The controller works fine without the flash so you only need to do it if you want to see it as part of the EVIC. I almost look at it as how an aftermakrket one works. I can use a Prodigy to control my trailer brakes, but can't see it in the EVIC. The factory one just looks cleaner to me, and works great.
