Default Oil Pressure drops to nothing, light comes on, truck never skips a beat.

Happened to me a couple of times over the last few weeks. At stop signs and stop lights, sometimes the oil pressure will drop to zero and the oil light kicks on. But the truck never misses, shudders, knocks, nothing.

A few days ago though, my check engine light kicked back on. I'm sort of thinking a fuel pump, but it could be something else. Any ideas guys? Any would be greatly appreciated.

My Cummins does the same thing. I believe the problem is the oil pressure sending unit is worn out and should be replaced. I also have a seprate oil pressure guage that reads the correct oil pressure while the oem is reading 0.

Agree that the sending unit is to blame. I had an older truck that this happened to.

Do you have any oil smoke (blue smoke) in the exhaust? I did and I pulled the plugs to check for oil and sure enough in the 8th cylinder I was burning some oil, I was having oil pressure issues, I assume that was my issue, when you talk about stop signs, first thing that comes to my mind is perhaps oil running away from the pump when you slow down, I assume that could give a false warning, but its probably unlikely, do you have any unexpected oil loss when checking with the dip stick?

EDIT* My truck was drinking oil, that was the reason I pulled the plugs.. FYI

Wow...could this thing be in a harder place to get to? There's just the smallest amount of room possible to fit a wrench.

I failed to change it, but I did take a peak down in the intake and noticed it's pretty nasty looking in there. So I figure I may as well wait and change the unit when I change out my plenum gasket.

Any possible catastrophic consequences to not changing this thing out right away?

And I drove my truck down to the auto parts store this morning and the oil pressure never dropped.

That happened to us, and we found through various forums that the oil pickup tube screen becomes clogged. So I dropped the oil pan, and sure enough, it was almost completely blocked. The design of the oil pan is such that when oil is drained not all of the oil gets out, leaving about 3/4" in the bottom. If you've used cleaning additives, all of the "gunk" goes to the bottom and makes the problem worse.

On our truck I soaked the oil pickup tube in gasoline and it still took a while to get it clean! I also scrubbed the oil pan clean. Although the oil pump was apparently okay, I went ahead and changed it while I was there. PROBLEM SOLVED!
