Default mpg Surprise

Like other people on this site, I have been a little disappointed with the mpg's out of the 2011 Rams. And like the others, I go by: "It is the price you pay to drive a dang good looking fast truck." All of my trips so far, the most I was able to get was around 17.1 mpg for highway driving. I had to take a trip today and I did something with the truck that increased my mpg's to 21.1 mpg . And I was very surprised with this change. The driving for today's trip was mostly highway with some in the mountains. Although this change was hard to do, the only thing I changed was (this is kind of hard to say). I had to slow down. It was really hard. The Hemi horses really wanted to run, but I had to keep saying no. For the trip I only drove 60 - 65 mph. I had a lot of cars and other trucks passing me. That was hard doing because the speed limit was 70 mph. I usually drive 75 - 80 mph. With the price at the pump, I guess I will slow down to get the extra 4 mpg. This was also running just 87 octane.

I thought I would share this info.

Darn that skinny pedal
it causes us to do all sorts of fun things
with all the computers in our Rams, it likely has a MIND CONTROL module

Thats will power. I don't have that kind of patience. Even my 4500 pound boat gets pulled at 70 to 75 mph. I set the cruse and enjoy the ride. I get 9 to 10 pulling the boat. Yes, I would get better mpg slowing down, but I can't do it, nope can't do it! Love the 392 gears!

I'm way too impatient for 60-65.. even if that was the speed limit! I look forward to gaining mpgs on longer stretches in town. But when it comes to the highway (especially on the 40hr round trip I have coming up), no way will I be driving to conserve fuel.

Time is money!

lately my MPG has drooped because of my decision to enjoy my truck a little better. My MPG is on the lows 13's now. Time to drive like an old man again (ops! I am an old man, lol.)

As the speed increases over 65 our wonderful truck's really bad coefficient of drag makes a big difference. I'm in no way complaining about the MPG with my truck though. I live in a suburban area (lots of 35 - 40 roads) and get over 15 on a regular basis. On the highway unloaded I'm near 20 and towing I'm over 12 mpg. I think that's pretty good for what I have. At times I probably drive like an old lady but just because you carry a 44 Magnum doesn't mean you need to pull it out. It'll be there when you need it

My city mpg went up to 14.8 from 13.2 by using cruise and keeping it under 3000 rpm. I've noticed that when I reset the mpg on highway trips you can tell hills will really hurt you. One time I reset it going downhill and it showed about 36 but then I went up a hill and it shot down to about 14. Average I get going to lampasas going about 80 the whole way is 16-17 due to all the hills

Just arrived in Edmonton from Calgary and locked the cruise at 75mph (121Km/hr) (75 degrees f outside or 24/25 celcius) and I am very pleased to say I rolled in to the Hotel parking lot with a magical 20.5MPG or about 11.3L/100km. I did a little WOT here and there on the highway but it seems pretty damn good for such a large truck. Showing 690KM until empty...

Couple note worthy items:

At about 7000km on the truck and running 91 Octane with NO Ethanol, K&N CAI and Mobil 1 Synthetic. I am almost tempted to buy a tonneau while i'm up here to see if reducing the drag will increase my MPG even more.

Loth
