There are a lot of them on ebay for decent prices. On most the hose don't look to be of good quality, but a guy could change that pretty easy.

First, it is not plastic, but ABS pipe which has to hold up to all sorts of plumbing conditions in a house for decades. That is some left over pipe I had from a sink install. If it can hold up for decades in a house, I think it will be OK. Also the vinyl was from some trim I installed around windows over ten years ago. The trim that I installed (this was left over) has stood up to sun, rain and cold with no cracking, fading or chipping, so that I am also confident of, and I didn't use glue, I used epoxy. This stuff bonds like nothing else. If you prep it correctly, good luck breaking it apart. I can't open this can up for nothing. It is all bonded shut permanently. You should also keep in mind that the suction is constantly blowing (or sucking) air through the inside of it so it ventilates it and keeps the heat from really building up. I have touched it after driving for a couple of hours, and while it is warm, it is not scalding hot. I can grab it without having to pull back. I have opened it up a couple of times to make sure that it is catching oil, and that the drain is big enough for the oil to flow out.
I would have thought that it would have gotten hotter than that. Nice to know. On the other hand, during the summer, you can't touch anything under the hood of my truck without getting 2nd degree burns. That whole 115 degree average summer day here means at least 150 out here. That is why we have to buy batteries every other year and replace our hoses a whole lot more often.

Good info and ingenuitive catch can. I am thinking of doing something similar but I will use metal instead.

OK, so I am a little surprised that you can get these things on Amazon starting around $20!

Can you run a catch can on a 2006 5.7L? The 2 hoses that attach to the can where do they come from and lead to?

I could be wrong but I think the system on the 06 is internal so a catch can wont work. Do some searching or someone else chime in and correct me if Im wrong.

yes you can buy cheap universal CC's, but I personally don't like the tacky looking sight tube off the side of the can. Also they don't unscrew at the bottom, they just have a plug to drain it. The one's these guys are installing are much nicer, and mount up with a "kit" so it's easy and done well for sure. All the good stuff about them aside, I still can't spend over $100 on one...

Yes first gen hemi is internal, you can do it but it's harder, there is a thread on here with the steps/process...

I understand people wanting to save a buck, I totally respect people wanting to make their own and I think its cool to fab your own stuff. That being said , on the flip side I have no problem at all spending 100 bucks to keep oil out of my intake, TB and combustion chambers. Ive seen alot more money spent on mods that dont pay off the way the catch can does.

I'm surprised also. I didn't think they would go that cheap, but I would be concerned about the quality. First off, that hose it comes with is crap. That will definitely not hold up to the engine heat. I bough fuel line hose for mine to ensure it would not deteriorate. So expect to spend another $10 for hose. Also if you buy one like that you have to make sure it doesn't leak air. When I tried the air separator the first time I found my truck ran crappy once it sprung a leak. Every system may be different, but the extra air messed up my settings on the ECM. That's why I sealed every opening with epoxy and put a rubber washer on the drain for a good seal.

BTW if you can make one from metal, that is great. I personally have no experience with metal work so I have to settle for what I know. After you mentioned about heat I decided to measure the thickness of the wall on the pipe. The wall of the ABS pipe is 1/8" thick, I don't think that will be melting any time soon no matter how hot it gets.

I agree with you, I don't like the site tube either. You really don't need to see how full it is. Just drain it at the next oil change and should be good to go.

Yea, it's a good mod that most people wont give any thought to. I understand that it's easy and attractive to buy one already made, but I enjoy a challenge. For me it was not only saving the money, but the challenge of putting it together. It's a puzzle, and you have to figure out how to make all the jumble of pieces work together. That for me is entertaining. The fun factor was a bonus for me.

All in all I like ur idea, nice work on the custom catch can, looks pretty good. Every1 will always be indifferent on spending money or not on catch cans and it will never win either side. thanks for the pics!
